Final Stats

SAN MARCOS - UTSA outhit Texas State 20-11 and more than doubled its runs scored Friday night, all leading to a 15-6 win in the opening game of the I-35 Maroon vs. Orange Rivalry Series at Bobcat Field.

The loss drops Texas State to 31-12 overall and 18-6 in the Southland Conference. Texas State has not lost back-to-back games this season since a three-game skid in March when the team fell to Sam Houston State, Baylor and Lamar.

With the win, UTSA improves to 26-19 overall and 15-10 in the SLC. The Roadrunners hit six home runs in the decision, a tally Texas State has not surrendered since 1993 against UT Arlington.

Kane Holbrooks was issued the loss, his first of the season, and falls to 9-1. The senior fought for 3.2 innings, but UTSA broke through for 11 hits and 10 earned runs. Holbrooks managed three strike outs in the appearance.

Red Patterson earned the victory after working seven innings and holding the Bobcats to eight hits and four runs, three of which were earned.

Tyler Sibley tagged the hurler for three hits and finished the night 4-for-5 to lead Texas State at the plate. The freshman mauled a 3-1 offering from Patterson to open the game with a solo home run to left field for the Bobcats early 1-0 lead.

UTSA replied with an RBI triple to center from Ryan Hutson that could have done more damage than tying the game. After Tyler Carpenter was pushed across the plate, Hutson tried to score, but Bret Atwood connected with Ben Theriot by way of Jason Martinson to tag the runner out at home.

Theriot carried over the intensity in the bottom of the second with a lead-off double to left field. The junior shifted to third on a groundout and an RBI single from Jason Martinson brought him home for a one-run advantage. Martinson would score one batter later when a throwing error from third base went wide and gave room for Texas State to go up 3-1.

The lead would be the last the Bobcats would see in the game as UTSA put up four runs in the top of the third, including a pair of home runs from Carpenter and Casey Selsor. Selsor added another home run in the top of the eighth and finished 3-for-5 at the plate. Hutson also notched a pair homers, going 3-for-5 as well, with four RBIs.

The Roadrunners stretched the lead to a 10-3 decision in the top of the fourth and the Bobcats bats could not break through.

In the bottom of the fifth Keith Prestridge scored after a two innings lull, after reaching on a double to left center and two final runs were added to the tally in the bottom of the eighth.

Game Two of the series will be played tomorrow afternoon at Roadrunner Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. Right-hander Zach Tritz is slated to face southpaw Kris Ruepke on the mound.
