SAN MARCOS - Junior Ben Theriot led the team with a 3-for-5 night at the plate and Garret Carruth picked up his second-career win as the Texas State Bobcats rolled to an 18-4 win over Houston Baptist Tuesday night at Bobcat Field.

Texas State improves to 20-10 overall while Houston Baptist falls to 2-24. The Huskies will return to San Marcos Monday to close-out the two-game series this season.

The Bobcats opened with a 2-0 lead over the Huskies when Kyle Livingstone and Paul Goldschmidt rapped out a pair of singles to reach base. Spencer Dennis followed with an RBI sacrifice fly and Lance Loftin singled through the left side to score Goldschmidt for the two-run edge.

Matt Steiner held HBU scoreless from the mound in the top three innings, but the foe found a way to break through in the top of the fourth. Back-to-back base hits and a walk loaded the diamond but on Jose Perez' sacrifice fly in the next at-bat, Laurn Randell caught the lead runner moving home from right field to hold off the score. However a follow-up single through the left side broke open the game and with his second set of loaded bases, Steiner walked in a run for a 3-2 game.

Garret Carruth closed out the inning and picked up the win allowing just one hit over his 2 1/3 stay on the mound.

The one-run margin did not last for long as Texas State used three hits for three runs to take a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the third.

The Bobcats scored one run in the bottom of the fifth and tacked on three in the bottom of the sixth off Dennis' three-run homer, his first of the season, but the true damage did not come until the bottom of the seventh.

The Huskies went through three pitchers and taking advantage of one error, the Bobcats batted around for an eight-run inning to put the game out of reach. Jason Martinson, who finished the game 2-for-3, notched his third home run of the season with a three-run shot in the top of the frame.

Dennis, Goldschmidt, and Randell all finished with a pair of hits in the Bobcats 17-hit tally.

HBU managed nine hits with Andrew Taccolini leading the bunch with three. The right fielder scored in the top of the eighth and the Huskies sent their final run across in the top of the ninth.

Texas State will move on from tonight's decision to a battle for the Southland Conference No. 1 spot this weekend. Southeastern Louisiana is 10-5 in league action and will travel to San Marcos for a three-game series beginning Thursday.
