SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State Softball clinched the 2009 Southland Conference title this afternoon with a 1-0 win over visiting Stephen F. Austin. The title is the Bobcats second in as many years and fourth overall. The Bobcats are the first team to claim a spot in the SLC Tournament that is coming up in two weeks, in Lake Charles, La. Hosted by McNeese State. The Bobcats will enter the tournament as the No. 1 seed for the second straight time.
"We came out today knowing that all we needed was one more win to claim the title. It's great to win here at home in front of our family and fans," said Head coach Ricci Woodard.
Texas State improved its record to 34-15, 21-6 SLC maintaining a four-game lead over its SLC opponents. SFA drops its record to 27-24, 16-11 SLC. There are only three games remaining in SLC play before the conference tournament.
Senior shortstop lead-off batter Alex Newton started the game off with a solo shot over left field wall for her fifth homer of the season to give Texas State a 1-0 lead in the first. Newton's long haul was the eventual game winning run as both teams failed to put any more runs on the board. Newton went 2-for-3 with one run and an RBI on the day.
Chandler Hall earned her 20th win on the mound today as she pitched a complete game for the Bobcats. Hall leads the SLC in conference play ERA with 0.55. She struck out three batters, while allowing zero runs to help lead the Bobcats to another SLC title.
"Even though we have claimed the SLC Regular Season title, we still have the SLC tournament to prepare for. Our business is not yet finished, with our goal being the NCAA Tournament," said Woodard.
The Bobcats return to Bobcat Field for their last home game of the season on Thursday, April 30 at 6:00pm against North Texas for Texas State Softball Senior Night. Seven seniors represent the Class of 2009; Katie Garnett, Taylor Hall, Tamara Keller, Ryan Kos, Ali McCormack, Alex Newton and Jetta Weinheimer.
