SAN MARCOS, Texas - Today's matchup of Texas State versus Stephen F. Austin on the softball diamond proved to be a good one. With both teams battling to be the best in the Southland, they left it all on the field. SFA captured game one of the double header winning, 2-0. The Bobcats responded in game two with a 3-2 edge over the Ladyjacks. Texas State remains four games ahead of its opponents with a 20-6 SLC record. SFA's record improves to 16-10.
Game one was a long one as it remained scoreless until the top of the seventh inning. Both teams combined for five hits, with both teams looking for one that would break the game open.
With one out in the seventh the Kim Daley was walked, followed by a hit by Jessica Arana to put players on third and second. Karissa Jones stepped to the plate and single to right center driving in both players for a 2-0 lead over the Bobcats.
Texas State was not able to score in the seventh dropping its sixth game to an SLC opponent. Chandler Hall took the loss for the day after solid pitching on the mound.
The Bobcats didn't waste any time putting up runs in game two. Leadoff batter Alex Newton bunted to first base and advanced to second after a wild pitch by SFA pitcher Lauren Luetge. Taylor Hall was walked for the 36th time this season, improving her single season school record in the category. Chandler Hall batted third with a sacrifice bunt moving both Newton and T. Hall one base.
Next in what to some may have looked like a trick play by the Bobcats, Jenna Emery fouled out first baseman Kayla Gutowski and managed to score two RBI on the play. While Gutowksi held on to the ball in foul territory Newton received the go ahead from Head coach Ricci Woodard to tag up and run home.
In the same play, SFA still seemed to be confused as T. Hall also made it home giving the Bobcats a 2-0 lead in the first.
The game remained the same until the top of the sixth when Ashley Struchtemeyer nailed a three-run homer over left center to tie the game at, 2-2.
Texas State did not give up as Emery earnd her third RBI of the game when she hit a sac fly to center field scoring T. Hall on the play for her second run of the game.
SFA was not able to score again in the game as Texas State took the game, 2-3, to tie the series at one game apiece. Katie Garnett earned her 14th win of the season, tossing three strikeouts in seven innings of play.
Both teams will hit the field again as game time is set for 12:00pm at Bobcat Field.
