After fighting the rain for two days straight, the Texas State Bobcats finally took the field and fired an offensive attack that the Northwestern State Demons could not handle.
Tyler Sibley went 4-for-5 with a pair of home runs and
Kane Holbrooks tossed a complete game to give the Bobcats a 15-3 seven-inning run rule victory in game one and the team backed it with a 15-10 victory in game two to complete the sweep Sunday afternoon at Brown-Stroud Field.
Texas State improves to 27-10 overall and 15-5 in Southland Conference play, while Northwestern State drops to 16-18 and 10-9, respectively.
Game One
A solo homer from Paul Goldschmidt in the top of the first gave Texas State the beginner's edge, but it was a nine-run second frame the pulled the game out of reach for the win.
Spenser Dennis drew a leadoff walk and Ben Theriot followed with a double to right center to put runners on the corners for Kyle Livingstone. The junior laced a base hit through the right side to score Dennis, but Jimmy Heard hit Lance Loftin and tossed a wild pitch to give Theriot a chance to score and the Bobcats a 3-0 lead. Sibley doubled the tally in his at-bat on one out with his fifth-career home run, placing the ball in deep left field and Bret Atwood continued to tap Heard for a double down the left line. The hurler walked Goldschmidt, but Keith Prestridge came behind with the second three-run homer of the inning, a shot to right field to give Texas State a 9-0 advantage. Lance Loftin tacked on the final run of the inning with an RBI single through the left side and Texas State headed into the bottom of the third with a 10-0 edge.
Holbrooks stayed strong on the mound and pitched four perfect innings before giving up a hit; meanwhile Texas State grew its lead to 14 runs before NSU made its mark on the board.
In the bottom of the fifth, Joe Urtuzuastegui notched the first hit off Holbrooks with a triple to right center and NSU used a groundout and a double to close out the inning with two runs.
The team managed one more run in the bottom of the seventh off three base hits, but the damage had already been done.
Holbrooks shut down the Demons for just six hits in his first-career complete game. The senior walked just one batter while striking out five.
All but two Bobcats notched a hit in the game, including Atwood who went 3-for-4 in doubles alone.
Game Two
Keith Prestridge went 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs and Texas State's offense remained hot for a 15-10 victory to complete the sweep.
Texas State posted three runs over the first two innings, but NSU took its first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of the third with a four-run frame. Justin O'Neal notched a three-run homer and two hits later, Tyler Baisley hit an RBI single up the middle for the 4-3 lead.
Colin Bear launched another home run in the bottom of the fourth to spread the margin, but Texas State brought on an eight-run frame in the top of the fifth to fight back.
A pair of base hits and a hit batter loaded the diamond for Paul Goldschmidt and the junior grabbed two RBIs with a slice up the middle, only to be followed by a three-run homer from Prestridge to clear the bases all on no outs. Texas State struck the Demons for four more base hits that led to three runs for the 11-5 comeback.
Kyle Kubitza hit a two-run double in the top of the sixth to grow the lead, but in an effort to avoid the sweep NSU scored four runs off four hits for a two-run game. The Demons left three runners on base and through a pair of pitching changes, Michael Russo struck out Joe Urtuzuastegui to end the inning.
Prestridge hit his final home run in the top of the ninth, a two-run shot to centerfield and Lance Lacoste answered it with a solo shot in the Demons half of the inning, but that would be the only run Russo would allow.
Tyler Brundrige was called in for relief in the third inning and pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless ball to pick up the win.
Atwood went 4-for-6 at the plate to lead Texas State's offense in game two.
The Bobcats return to action Wednesday night when they return to Baylor Ballpark for the final meeting this season with the Baylor Bears. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
