SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State softball powered through five hours of ball to split with visiting Texas Tech. The Bobcats went to extra innings with the Red Raiders, but came up short after nine, falling 3-2. Texas State came out swinging in the second game, registering eight hits to help lead the Bobcats to a 5-1 victory. The Bobcats win today over Texas Tech marks their fifth win over a Big 12 opponent this season.
Texas Tech's Skyler Peterson singled up the middle in the top of the third driving in Elizabeth Eimen for the first score of the game.
Third baseman Jenna Emery hit a solo home run for the Bobcats in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at one a piece, eventually putting the game into extra innings.
After both teams going scoreless in the eighth inning, the ninth inning called for more action. With both teams playing with the International Tie Breaker rule, Texas Tech was up to bat first. Danie Matthews reached base on an error by the first baseman, while Emily Bledsoe advanced to third. Elizabeth Eimen was walked by Chandler Hall, setting up bases loaded with two outs for the Red Raiders. Stephanie Drewry singled through the left side, driving in both Matthews and Bledsoe to take the 3-1 lead.
C. Hall singled to left center to start the ninth, driving in Kristina Tello to bring the Bobcats to within one. Despite two more Bobcats reaching base in the inning, they were not able to score again, dropping the game, 3-2 to the Red Raiders.
In game one, the Bobcats were only able to register three hits, committing three errors in the loss. C. Hall took the loss for the game with a record of 18-8. The Bobcats hit a .263, to TTU's .201. Both teams were only able to combine for seven hits before going into extra innings.
Game two was a different game for the Bobcats. Alex Newton singled up the middle in the bottom of the third and Kristina Tello followed up with a fielder's choice. Taylor Hall singled to right field to load the bases for the Bobcats. C. Hall singled to right field, driving in Newton. Jenna Emery batted a single down the left field line to score the Bobcats second run of the inning, when Tello scored on the play.
Putting insurance on their win Texas State put more runs on the board when McKenzie Baack homered to right field to lead off the sixth. Newton doubled to left center scoring both Allison Snow and Ryan Kos. Texas State went up 5-1 and the Red Raiders were not able to recover as the Bobcats earned the win.
Katie Garnett pitched game two, earning her 11th win of the season. The senior starter pitched all seven innings, recording four strikeouts and just one earned run.
C. Hall finished the day 3-for-5 (.600) with two RBI. Emery was 2-for-4 (.500) with a homer and two RBI to her belt. The Bobcats finished the day batting .216 and holding the Red Raiders to .177.
The Bobcats hit the road this weekend when they travel to Northwestern State to play the Demons. Game time for Saturday's game double header is set for 1:00p.m. They will play at 12:00p.m. on Sunday, April 19.
