Alex Newton Homerun Sparks a 6-1 Win over UTSA

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Five runs in the first inning lifted the Texas State Softball team to a 6-1 victory over visiting I-35 rival UTSA. The Bobcats hit two home runs in first inning to get the momentum going. Texas State improved to 28-13, 16-5 SLC. UTSA's record drops to 21-20, 14-10 SLC.

Alex Newton got the Bobcats started off on a high note when the lead-off batter connected with the ball on the first pitch of the game and knocked the ball to deep left field for the shortstops first home run of the season.

Two batters later, Taylor Hall walked to get to first base. Jenna Emery singled and advanced to third on an error. Hall scored on the same play after an error by the center fielder sent the ball into the Bobcat dugout. McKenzie Baack was the second batter of the inning that was walked giving the Bobcats a runner on first and third. Ali McCormack stepped up to the plate and blasted the ball to left center driving in both runners for her first home run of the season.

In the bottom of the fourth Ryan Kos hit a solo home run over the center field wall to extend the Bobcats lead to 6-0. The home run is Kos' fourth of the season.

Texas State batted a .266, including three home runs. Chandler Hall pitched 6.0 innings, recording nine strikeouts and allowing only four hits on her stay at the mound. Hall improves her record to 18-7.

Texas State returns to action on Monday, April 13 when they host Texas Tech in a double header starting at 1:00p.m. at Bobcat Field.
