SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Texas State softball team faced its I-35 rival UTSA tonight in a double header match up. By the end of the night each team walked away with one win a piece and motivation to win tomorrow's game. The Bobcats are 27-13, 15-5 SLC, while the Roadrunners are 21-19, 14-9 SLC.
Texas State fell behind early giving UTSA a 1-0 lead when they walked in a run with the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the first. The Bobcats recovered by recording to strikeouts and a pop fly to end the inning.
Ryan Kos hit a triple to left field to put the Bobcats in scoring position. Ali McCormack came up to bat next and singled to shortstop to drive in Kos for the tying run.
Chandler Hall laid down a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the third scoring Taylor Hall on the play giving the Bobcats a 2-1 edge.
The Roadrunners came back in the sixth when Danye Holmes reached base on an error by left field. Chelsey Chapman advanced to second and Caitlin Ivy scored at home.
With the game tied at the end of the seventh inning the Bobcats were forced into only their second extra inning game of the season. In the ninth inning Ivy singled down the right side to drive in Rudi Cantu for the eventual game winning run for the Roadrunners.
In the second game, Ali McCormack slammed the ball to deep right center in the bottom of the second to record a triple and drive in two runs to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
UTSA responded in the third when Krista Sitka hit a double to left field driving in Amber Anderson on the play.
Taylor Hall hit a double to left center driving in Alex Newton for the run. Jenna Emery batted next hitting a single to center field. Chandler Hall gave the Bobcats their second double of the inning when she hit the ball to left center scoring Emery at the plate to give Texas State a 4-1 edge going into the fourth inning to go on and win the game.
Newton finished the night 4-for-7 (.571), with a run and a double. Chandler Hall pitched all nine innings in the first game allowing just one earned run and recording 11 strikeouts. Katie Garnett was the winning pitcher in the second game recording four strikeouts and earning her 10th win of the season.
The Bobcats and the Roadrunners return to Bobcat Field tomorrow at 12:00p.m. for the final game of the I-35 Rivalry series.
