Final Stats
SAN MARCOS -
Junior first baseman Paul Goldschmidt added a second set of home runs against Purdue Sunday afternoon and the Texas State baseball team scored runs in all but two innings to complete a three-game sweep over the Boilermakers at Bobcat Field.
Texas State improves to 9-3 on the season after taking its second-straight weekend sweep and will look to use the momentum Tuesday night when they face No. 18 TCU, who boasts a 9-2 record.
Like the first two games, Texas State pounded away at the plate to take the early lead with a four-run margin over two innings. Goldschmidt belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the first, scoring the leadoff pair of Tyler Sibley and Bret Atwood for the edge.
A sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the second frame from Atwood scored Jason Martinson who led off the inning with a double to centerfield gave the Bobcats their fourth tally.
Purdue responded with two runs in the top of the third to chop the lead in half, but Texas State added two in the bottom of the third for a 6-2 score.
Keith Prestride, who went 2-for-2 for the day, led off the frame with a hard-hitting triple to left center and Laurn Randell notched an RBI with a double to right center that followed. After stealing third, the right fielder scored on Jordan Kopycinski's base hit to right field.
Texas State posted another big inning in the fourth thanks to Goldschmidt's second home run in just his second at-bat. The power brought home Atwood who reached on a walk to give Texas State a 9-2 spark.
Dan Black countered the effort with a two-run blast of his own to trim Texas State's margin and the Boilers added two more runs in the top of the sixth for a 9-6 game.
But Texas State answered in the bottom of the inning with three more runs. Kopycinski added another RBI on a groundout to score Adam Witek. Sibley notched an RBI single through the left side to score Kyle Livingstone and a wild pitch that got away from Kevin Cahill gave Martinson room to score the Bobcats final run of the inning. Witek and Livingstone led off the frame with a pair of base hits.
Two runs in the bottom of the eighth wrapped up Texas State's scoring for day, using a sacrifice fly from Goldschmidt and an RBI single through the left side from Loftin for the 14-6 gap.
Purdue did not go quietly, scoring four runs off five hits from relief pitcher Mitchell Pitts in the late rally.
Brian Borski earned his third win after working five innings, surrendering five hits and four runs, two of which were earned. The sophomore fanned two batters and walked four.
Matt Bichoff took the loss for Purdue and shifts to 0-1. Sibley finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and two walks.
Witek and Livingstone both went 2-for-5 in the winning effort. Texas State out-hit Purdue 16-12.
First pitch against the Horned Frogs is set for 6:30 p.m. with Michael Russo set to take the mound. This will mark the final regular season meeting between Texas State and TCU.
