SAN MARCOS - First baseman Paul Goldschmidt homered twice and led the Texas State Bobcats with four RBIs as the team took a 17-4 win over the Purdue Boilermakers Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Field.
Texas State exploded in the bottom of the third for seven runs off six hits to take a 9-0 lead over Purdue. Jason Martinson and Laurn Randell highlighted the frame with a pair of RBIs each on a triple and double, respectively.
Kane Holbrooks had an impressive stay on the mound, firing six scoreless innings while surrendering just six hits. Holbrooks walked two batters and notched three strikeout and shifts to 3-0 with the victory.
Bret Atwood, who finished the day 2-for-5 with an RBI, scored Texas State's first run after beating out an infield single and using his speed to steal second base. An RBI single from designated hitter Spenser Dennis sent Atwood home for a 1-0 score.
The Bobcats struck again in the bottom of the third when Tyler Sibley led off with an infield single and shifted to second on a sacrifice bunt. Matt Jansen struck out Paul Goldschmidt to put the Boilers just one out away from safety, but Dennis belted an RBI single to start Texas State's rally.
Martinson followed, scoring Adam Witek and Lance Loftin with his three-base blast off the centerfield wall and came home on Randell's double to right center. Witek drew a walk and Loftin notched his only hit of the afternoon on a single to centerfield to reach base.
Randell's hit brought home catcher Jordan Kopycinski, who reached on a walk from Jansen, as well.
Purdue brought in Drew Wurdack to hold off the Bobcats surge, but Sibley brought home Randell with a single to centerfield.
With an eight-run lead intact, Goldschmidt gave Texas State a 12-0 advantage with a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth and a three-run blast to right field in the bottom of the fifth. The pair of home runs marked Goldschmidt's 20th and 21st in his career at Texas State.
Purdue's only scoring inning came in the top of the seventh, taking advantage of senior Aaron Taylor's fresh arm. The senior made his first appearance of the season and surrendered three runs off just two hits with a set of walks.
Texas State's offense erased the damage with four more runs in the bottom of the frame and added one run in the bottom of the eighth to take the win.
Randell went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI and Sibley finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. All but three batters added a hit to Texas State's 14-11 hit margin over Purdue. This marks the ninth game Texas State has recorded 10 or more hits in a game this season.
Jansen took the loss for Purdue and shifts to 1-2. The right-hander pitched 2.2 innings and allowed eight runs off seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Texas State will send Brian Borski to the mound tomorrow afternoon to close out the series. Borski is 2-0 with a team-best 1.29 ERA.
