CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas State softball swept Texas A&M - Corpus Christi in a double header this afternoon on the road at Chapman Field. The Bobcats took the early lead in both games and never looked back. They won the first game 8-1 and the second 9-3. McKenzie Baack led Texas State going 4-for-6 with three RBI and one run.
Texas State scored a run in all but two innings in route to its 8-1 win over AMCC in game one of the double header. Alex Newton scored in the first inning after being walked, then advancing to third on a ground and fly out. Baack sent a single down the right side to send Newton home.
Kristina Tello doubled in the second inning, before a Taylor Hall single to left field sent her home bringing the score to, 2-0.
Baack led off the third inning with a double down the left field line. Leah Boatright bunted advancing Baack to third. Jenna Emery reached base on error by first base that sent Baack home. It set up a single by Allyce Rother, who advanced to second on an error by right field. Both Emery and Boatright scored unearned runs on the play. Rother advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored at the plate, with an RBI by Tello.
The Bobcats scored two more runs to beat the Islanders 8-1. They outhit AMCC 10-2. Chandler Hall earned the win after pitching 5.0 innings allowing two hits and one run.
In the second game the Bobcats scored three runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Both Megan Parten and Kristina Tello were walked by AMCC pitcher Addie Tallman, with two outs on the board. Shortstop Alex Newton singled a bunt to first base to load the bases. Tallman feeling some pressure walked right fielder Taylor Hall to give the Bobcats their first run. Baack came up to the plate next planting a bunt of her own to send Tello home. Leah Boatright singled to right field driving in Newton for their third run. T. Hall was out at the plate trying to score at home to end the inning.
A Tello single and a T. Hall walk, but runners on first and second with Baack up to the plate. Baack singled to center field advancing to third on an error by center field that allowed both T. Hall and Tello to score unearned runs.
The Bobcats went on to score four more runs, beating the Islanders 9-3. Both teams had eight hits and AMCC had four errors to the Bobcats one. Katie Garnett was the winning pitcher in game two improving her record to 6-4 after pitching all seven innings.
The teams will hit the field again tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. to wrap up the series.
