SAN MARCOS -
Freshman Tyler Sibley belted his first-career home run to complete a 3-for-3 night with three runs scored and lead the Texas State Bobcats to a 9-2 victory over the Purdue Boilermakers Friday night at Bobcat Field.
The win improves Texas State to 7-3 on the season and marks the first victory in the new Bobcat stadium. The Boilers are now 2-5.
Game two of the series is set for a 2 p.m. start with Kane Holbrooks and Matt Jansen expected on the mound.
Texas State erupted at the plate for seven hits over the first three innings to take a 6-0 lead. Sibley was the first run across after a leadoff single and the freshman shifted to second on a bunt from Bret Atwood. Paul Goldschmidt notched the RBI on a base hit to right field.
An error from second base gave Atwood a chance to score and a ground out sent Goldschmidt home for Texas State's 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, Atwood's single through the left side gave the Bobcats their fourth run, plating Jason Martinson who reached on a fielder's choice.
Another miscue from the Boilers widened the gap in the third inning after Ben Theriot hit a double to left center. Third baseman Dan Black overthrew Randell's hit the left side and Theriot headed home while the junior landed at second and eventually scored on a passed ball.
Purdue responded with a run in the top of the sixth on two outs on Brandon Havemen's RBI double to right center.
Texas State mimicked the effort with Sibley's two-out homer over to left field, the first Bobcat home run in the new facility.
Jonathan Lilly scored the Boilers final run in the top of the eighth inning and the Bobcats tacked on two more in the bottom of the frame to finalize the score.
Starting pitcher Zach Tritz earned his third win of the season, shutting down Purdue for six hits and just one earned run. The right-hander snagged a career-high eight strikeouts, including a pair in the top of the second.
