SAN MARCOS - Kane Holbrooks tossed eight complete innings and improved to 5-0 on the season as he led the Texas State Bobcats to a 7-4 victory over the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks Friday night at Bobcat Field.

Texas State improves to 15-8 overall and 7-3 in Southland Conference action, while SFA falls to 7-15 and 2-7, respectively. Holbrooks retired the side in the top of the seventh and shut the Lumberjacks offense down for four runs, three of which were earned, off nine hits. The senior added a pair of strikeouts in the winning decision.

At the plate, Spenser Dennis led the Bobcats offense, going 3-for-4 with a single RBI.

SFA took the early lead in the top of the first on an RBI groundout from Sean Meyers, but Texas State countered with three of their own in the bottom portion of the inning.

Erik Gregersen walked three-straight batters and Dennis drove in the first run on a single through the left side. The right-hander struck out Ben Theriot in the next at-bat, but Kyle Kubitza rallied on two out for a pair of runs with a follow-up single to left field.

The Bobcats lengthened the gap in the bottom of the fourth when three hits brought in four runs for a 7-1 game.

Dennis opened the frame with his second single to left and scored two batters later when Adam Witek beat out a bunt down the right line. Jason Martinson kept the streak alive, driving in Kubitza who was issued a walk and SFA opted for a pitching change.

An error from the `Jacks infield did not help the right-hander out and Texas State added another set of runs before Keith Prestridge flew out to end the inning.

SFA's comeback was short-lived with one run in the top of the fourth and a two-run homer from Jeffrey Kello in the fifth.

Russo finished off the contest and earned his second save of the season, facing four batters but escaping the top of the ninth unharmed with a single strikeouts.

Gregersen took the loss for SFA after giving up six hits and seven runs in 2.1 innings.

Tomorrow's game against the Lumberjacks is set for 2 p.m.
