Final Stats
Beaumont, Texas -
Brian Borski grabbed his fourth-win of the season Sunday afternoon after tossing eight complete innings and rationing the Lamar Cardinals to just one run en route to a 4-1 victory for the Texas State Bobcats to clinch the weekend series.
The Bobcats improve to 12-8 overall and 6-3 in Southland Conference action, while Lamar falls to 16-7 and 5-4, respectively.
Borski held the Cardinals to a mere seven hits in the game. Lamar used two of the hits in the bottom of the third to match Texas State and tie the game at 1-1.
Texas State took the early lead with double from Jason Martinson that brought in Ben Theriot in the top of second. Theriot reached on a base hit to centerfield to lead off the inning.
Ryan Saldivar singled to open the inning, but Borski struck out the next two batters and it seemed Saldivar would be stranded on the diamond. But Saldivar stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Steven Tucker knocked in the Cardinals lone run with a double to left center.
After a scoreless fourth, the Bobcats broke open the tie in the top of the fifth with two runs, taking complete advantage of a Cardinal throwing error. Bret Atwood had time to reach second base on the wild throw and shifted to the scoring corner on a base hit from Paul Goldschmidt. Keith Prestridge knocked in the run with a sacrifice fly to centerfield and Spenser Dennis polished off the frame with a single down the left line to score Goldschmidt for the 3-1 edge.
Texas State added its final run in the top of the ninth on an error from Lamar's infield, as well. A wild throw from Chris Dunkin at third base gave Tyler Sibley time to score from the bag, after finding his way on a lead-off double and groundout.
The Bobcats notched seven hits in the decision and Goldschmidt led the team with a 2-for-5 outing at the plate.
Matison Smith took the loss for Lamar and shifts to 4-1 on the season.
Texas State will move on from the series to a five-game week at home. The Bobcats will host Prairie View A&M Tuesday night and Texas Tech on Wednesday before a three-game series with Stephen F. Austin on Friday.
