Final Stats
Corpus Christi, Texas -
Brian Borski maintained the weekend efforts from the Texas State Bobcats bullpen and worked eight strong innings while the Bobcats plated eight runs in the top five innings en route to a 10-2 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to make a clean sweep of the 2009 Southland Conference opening series at Whataburger Field.
The sophomore right-hander held the Islanders to just one unearned run off five hits, while Texas State hammered out 11 hits to take the final game of the series. Borski improves to 2-0 on the season and sheds nearly two points from his ERA for a team-best 1.29 average.
The Bobcats used a base hit laced through the right side by Paul Goldschmidt to open scoring on left-hander Roy Ferdin Sunday afternoon. Tyler Sibley led off the inning with a single to centerfield and Bret Atwood used a sacrifice bunt to shift him to second base and the freshman swiped third base before coming home on Goldschmidt's push.
Borski retired the side in the bottom of the first allowing Texas State to jump out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second on just one hit. Ferdin walked Adam Witek out of the gate and Jason Martinson hit a double down the left line to move the leadoff to the scoring corner, before a sacrifice fly from Keith Prestridge sent the senior to score.
With Martinson on third, the southpaw put runners on the corners by walking Sibley and a groundout scored Martinson and put the freshman on second base. Ferdin tossed a wild pitch to put Sibley on third and an error from Martin Parra at third base gave Sibley time to rush home.
A four-run fifth inning overwhelmed A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas State did the damage on two outs. Kyle Livingstone notched the first hit of the frame on a double down the left line wedged between the pair of outs and scored on an infield error that put Martinson on the base paths. A base hit from Jordan Kopycinsky and a double from Sibley plated Martinson and the pair came home to wrap up the inning on a long base-hit from Atwood to right field.
Goldschmidt led Texas State to its final pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning, driving a double down the right line to score Atwood who reach on a leadoff single to left field. Witek connected on his first hit of the night on two outs, sending a double down the right side to score Goldschmidt.
A&M-Corpus Christi dug out two runs in the dropped decision, scoring in the bottom of the sixth and ninth inning. A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning gave A&M-Corpus Christi its first run of the day, sending Chris Famiglietti home after reaching on an infield error to start the inning.
The Islanders dug out its final run in the bottom of the ninth on a bases-loaded ground out as Ernie Olivarez took advantage of the distraction after reaching on a leadoff single down the left line.
Jacob Perales led the Islanders with two hits and Justin Greiner notched the team's lone RBI.
Texas State one-through-three hole batters notched a pair of hits and Atwood tallied a game-high three RBIs.
Ferdin shifts to 1-1 with the loss, allowing eight runs, three of which were earned, off eight hits in 5.0 innings. The Islanders committed five errors in the game.
Texas State will take one days rest before its March 3 season opener against No. 4 Texas at Bobcat Field. The monumental meeting, as Texas State opens its newly-renovated stadium and the Longhorns make their first-ever trip to San Marcos is set for a 6:05 p.m. first pitch.
