Texas State Wins Cat Fight in Season Opener With 2-0 Win Over Bethune-Cookman

DELAND, Fla. - Texas State Softball wins first game of the season after beating Bethune-Cookman 2-0 and starting off the Stetson Lead-Off Classic, 1-0. The Bobcats held the Wildcats scoreless giving up only one hit the entire game.

Sophomore outfielder Allyce Rother scored Texas State's first run of the season after reaching base on a double to left field. After advancing to third on a ground out, Rother scored a run when Leah Boatright singled to the left side for the RBI.

A series of Wildcat errors put Megan Parten on second base and a ground out shifted her to the corner. Chandler Hall knocked in the second run after hitting a single up the middle to give the Bobcats a 2-0 score and the eventual win.

The Bobcats gave up one hit on the day in the third inning, when Bethune-Cookman managed to hit a double to left center but couldn't capitalize. Katie Garnett tallied her first win of the season giving up only one hit and recording five strikeouts in her first start of the season. Elizabeth Dennis was credited with the save tallying two strikeouts on the day.

This was the second time that the Bobcats and Wildcats have met with Texas State taking the overall lead, 2-0. Texas State improves to 1-0 on the season and Bethune Cookman falls to, 0-2.

The Bobcats had seven hits on the day and five players recording a hit. Boatright leading all batters going 2-for-3 on the day.

Texas State will take the field for the second time today at 5:30 p.m., when they match up against host team Stetson.
