Final Stats
Arlington, Texas -
The Texas State Bobcat baseball team scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, seventh and eighth inning to overcome a 2-0 Arkansas State lead and took a 3-2 victory from the Red Wolves Sunday afternoon at the UT Arlington/Hilton Invitational.
Texas State hit the diamond again at 3 p.m. against first-time opponent Siena and rushed by the Saints in a 10-5 contest to complete the sweep of today's action. The Bobcats are now 3-1 on the season.
Kane Holbrooks was credited with his first win of the season, tossing 8.0 innings with three strikeouts against Arkansas State. The senior held the foe to just five hits in game one.
Tyler Brundridge closed the contest and earned his first save after retiring the side in the ninth to hold off ASU's possible comeback.
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Paul Goldschmidt singled to right field to bring home Bret Atwood, who reached on a leadoff single to first base. The sophomore moved to second on a wild pitch before rounding the bases with Goldschmidt's hit.
In the seventh inning, Texas State struck again with a leadoff single from Laurn Randell and the tying run moved into scoring position on a throwing error from ASU's mound. Tyler Sibley brought in the score with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The go-ahead run crossed the plate in the bottom of the eighth with Sibley's help as well. The Bobcat newcomer laced a single to left field off ASU's fifth pitcher of the afternoon that scored Kyle Kubitza who reached on a base hit to left and shifted to third on a pair of ground outs.
Atwood went 2-for-5 as the lone Bobcat to take multiple hits. Lance Loftin completed the Bobcats seven-hit tally.
Game Two
Brian Borski gave the Bobcats room to breathe after retiring Siena's top three batters to open the game. Bret Atwood started the four-hit three-run inning with a one-out double to right field and scored on Paul Goldschmidt's base hit up the middle that followed. Lance Loftin roped a single to second base to base and moved to scoring position when Keith Prestridge hit an RBI single up the middle to plate Goldschmidt. The senior scored for Texas State's final run of the inning on a bases loaded walk.
Texas State had another big inning in the second, taking a 7-0 lead off four hits and an error from the short stop to put Sibley on base at leadoff. Atwood singled to third base and the pair came home on Goldschmidt's two-RBI double to right center. Loftin followed with a two-base knock of his own to plate Goldschmidt, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored the final run on a sacrifice fly from Prestridge.
The Bobcats added a run in the bottom of the third and a pair in the seventh for the win. Atwood went 4-for-5 with four runs scored, crossing the plate in the bottom of the second, third and seventh innings.
Siena put its run on the board in the top of the fourth, sending Kevin Quaranto across for the unearned tally. In the top of the sixth and eighth, the Saints tapped a pair of hits for two runs in each frame to reach half Texas State's tally, but that would be as close as they would come.
Eric Mruczek and Jason DeFilippo both notched two hits to lead Siena.
Six Bobcats recorded at least one hit in the 15-hit feat. Goldschmidt and Loftin recorded three hits, with two runs scored and three and two RBIs, respectively.
Texas State will remain on the road, taking on TCU at 6:30 p.m. at Lupton Stadium in Ft. Worth, Texas.
