BATON ROUGE, La. - The Texas State softball team beat the UAB Blazers, 3-0 in its first game of the Easton Purple and Gold Challenge hosted by LSU, in Baton Rouge, La. Taylor Hall went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run in the game. The Bobcats improve to 7-4, winning their third straight, while the Blazers fall to, 2-4.
Kristina Tello recorded a stolen base after stealing third. Tello appeared to be out, but UAB shortstop Natalie Mitchell was called for obstruction and the call was reversed. Taylor Hall batted the ball to deep right field allowing Tello to score at the plate and give the Bobcats the 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth the Bobcats went swinging as Alex Newton started things off with a double and advanced to third on an error by shortstop. Right fielder Taylor Hall was up to bat next as she knocked the ball to deep right sending Newton home. Leah Boatright had a sacrifice bunt that sent T. Hall running to third. McKenzie Baack was at the plate next, as reached base on a bunt that led to the Bobcats third run of the day when Taylor Hall scored home from third.
Texas State finished the game with three runs on 11 hits, while committing three errors. UAB had zero runs off three hits and one error. Katie Garnett earned her fourth win improving her record to 4-2 and Elizabeth Dennis earned her second save of the season.
The Bobcats return to the field tomorrow, Feb. 21 at 11:45 a.m. as they face Northern Iowa. They are set to play host school LSU at 2:00p.m. Play in the LSU Purple and Gold Challenge will continue on Sunday, when the teams enter championship play. Stay tuned to www.txstatebobcats.com for updates.
