SAN MARCOS, Texas - In front of a record setting 1,353 fans, the Texas State Softball team beat visiting No. 19 Texas A&M, 3-2 in the newly renovated Bobcat Field. The Bobcats improve to 6-4, while the Aggies drop their fifth straight falling to, 5-6.
"This is a historic night in Texas State Athletics. ...seeing this new stadium come to fruition and on opening night we beat a Top 25 team in front of a record crowd really speaks volumes to where this athletic department is going," said Texas State Athletic Director Larry Teis.
Texas A&M's Erin Glasco hit the ball to deep left in the top of the second to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead to start the game.
Texas State responded in the bottom of the third when Leah Boatright hit a single to the right side that sent Taylor Hall in from second base to bring the score to a 1-1 tie.
The Aggies hit their second solo homerun of the night when Holly Ridley connected with the ball and sent it to right center.
In the bottom of the fourth Kristina Tello advanced to first on an error by shortstop, which sent Chandler Hall running home for the Bobcats second run of the night.
Leah Boatright drove in the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh. With Alex Newton on third base and T. Hall on first, Boatright hit the ball to left center, allowing Newton to score the game winning run.
"Anytime you are playing a great ball club you are hoping to still be in the ball game at the end and give yourself a chance to win and that's exactly what we did," said Head coach Ricci Woodard.
Katie Garnett received credit for the win tonight as she pitched the last four innings for the Bobcats tallying five strikeouts in route to the win.
Texas State gave up two runs and two hits to the Aggies, but out-batted Texas A&M as they came out on top with seven hits and three runs.
"We focused on pitching well and having a good defense entering tonight's game. I felt like that is what we have been doing and that we accomplished it," stated Woodard.
"We know that this is just the beginning of where we will go in athletics," stated Teis. "We will continue to work on improving the gameday atmosphere and the stadium and we hope that Bobcat fans around will come back and see how the stadium progresses into a beautiful, state of the art facility."
