Austin, Texas- -
Coming into its game on Saturday afternoon, the Texas State men's basketball team knew they had an uphill battle when playing at second-ranked Texas. But, the Bobcats could not take advantage of some early scoring opportunities, and they found themselves in front of a hard-charging train that they couldn't stop it as the Longhorns rolled to an 87-54 victory.
Texas State actually scored the first two points of the game when Tony Bishop made a jumper from the right side of the free throw line to give the Bobcats an early 2-0 lead.
"We knew when we came in here that Texas was the more talented team," Texas State head coach Doug Davalos said. "But, I was disappointed because I thought they worked harder than we did."
After Bishop's initial basket, Texas took control of the game with a 16-0 run that was fueled five turnovers by Texas State. Texas scored its first points in the run when Damion James stole the ball and made a lay-up and free throw after being fouled by John Bowman.
After Avery Bradley hit a jumper, the Longhorns connected on three consecutive three-point shots before Bowman made a jumper on the right baseline to pull Texas State to within 16-4.
After Emmanuel Bidias A' Moute hit a jumper in the free throw lane, the Longhorns went on 15-4 run to extend their lead to 35-12 with 5:20 left in the first half.
Bowman scored five straight points for the Bobcats on a three-point field goal and lay-up to pull Texas State to within 35-17.
After Texas answered with a lay-up by Dexter Pittman, the Bobcats scored three more points when Bowman made one of his two free throws and John Rybak added a lay-up off an offensive rebound. However, the Longhorns closed the half with another 9-4 run to make the halftime score 46-24.
After intermission, Texas dismissed any ideas of the Bobcats getting back into the game as the Longhorns scored the first 11 points in the second period to open up a 57-24 lead with 15:43 left to play. Rybak scored Texas State's first points in the second half when he nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key, and the two teams exchanged baskets the rest of the way.
"I thought we figured out a few things in the second half," Davalos said. "The players were passing the ball to their teammates more instead of trying to score on tough shots by themselves."
By then, the game was already decided as Texas State couldn't get any closer than within 27 points the rest of the way.
J.B. Conley was the only Texas State player to score in double figures as he finished with 10 points off the bench. Rybak finished with nine points and team-high 10 rebounds, while Bowman and Bidias A' Moute scored eight points each.
James led Texas with game highs of 21 points and 16 rebounds, while Bradley scored 15 points and Jordan Hamilton added 14. Pittman and J'Covan Brown finished with nine points each.
The win improves Texas to 8-0 this season, while Texas State fell to 3-7 in front of 9,360 at the Erwin Center. Texas State plays its next game at DePaul on Dec. 19 in Chicago in a game that tips off at 1:00 p.m. at the Allstate Arena.
