ARLINGTON, Texas- Mo Middleton tied her career-high in kills to lead the Texas State volleyball team to an impressive victory against UT Arlington tonight as the battled the Lady Mavericsk to a 3-0 (25-12, 41-39, 25-16) win. The Bobcats improve to 15-12, 9-3 in the SLC.
Middleton racked up 18 kills (.471) and five digs, while Jessica Weynand added 13 kills and 13 digs for a double-double.
Texas State got into the groove after its third point. The Bobcats went on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 20-9. UTA's Tara Frantz ended the Bobcats run, but it wasn't enough as Texas State ran away with the set 25-12. Middleton had five kills to help Texas State hit a .310 average for the first set.
Set two went 41-39 in a remarkable rally between both teams, with Texas State coming out on top. Middleton got the second set started as she connected on a kill from Shelbi Irvin to start the set. Melinda Cave added to the Bobcat total as she recorded a kill of her own. Texas State went up 6-1 before the Lady Mavericks slowly started making their way back into the match. A Bobcat attack error tied the set at 7-All for the set. Cave brought the set to 13-All, but the Lady Mavericks scored four straight points to go up 17-13 on Texas State.
Texas State came out of the timeout pumped as they came to within one of UTA at 17-18. AJ Watlington brought the score to 19-20, followed by two kills by Middleton. With the set tied at 24-All, Weynand recorded a solo block to put the Bobcats on top. The set went into extra points as Middleton and Weynand were able to end the set on back-to-back kills for the Bobcats.
UTA jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third until Lydia Werchan ended the Lady Mavericks run. Amber Calhoun jumped in the mix registering two kills of her own making it a 4-6 match. A Weynand service ace gave the Bobcats a 10-9 lead, for the first lead of the set for Texas State.
The Bobcats jumped toa 15-12 lead forcing UTA to take a timeout to slow things down. Middleton scored the last two points of the match to give Texas State the set and win.
Texas State outhit UTA .287 to .189. Tara Frantz was the top kill leader for UTA as she tallied 15 kills on .231 hitting.
The 41-39 set is a record for the most points in a set by Texas State.
Texas State returns home on Thursday night as they host Lamar at 6:30pm. The Bobcats will play their last match at Strahan this season on Senior Day Saturday, Nov. 7 at 4:00pm. Texas State has two seniors Brittany Collins and Jessica Weynand.
