SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Mo Middleton led Texas State to a sweep of UTSA (25-16, 25-21, 25-15) on the road to extend its wins to nine straight and improve its record to 18-12, 12-3 in the SLC. The Bobcats play Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday to end the regular season.
Middleton recorded her fourth straight double digit kills match to lead Texas State. Jessica Weynand chipped in eight kills, while three other players were tied at seven.
UTSA grabbed control of the match to start the first set as they kept a small lead in the beginning, but three straight Roadrunner errors gave the Bobcats the lead at 11-8. Melinda Cave slammed down a kill to the right side, followed by a service ace by Caleigh McCorquodale forcing UTSA to call a timeout after a Texas State five-point lead.
Texas State continued its run extending its lead to 16-8, as the Roadrunners continued to make serious errors causing them to fall behind. Block assists by Weynand and Amber Calhoun put the Bobcats ahead, 18-10. With the Bobcats continuing to record blocks and the Roadrunners steady making errors, Texas State won the first set 25-16. Texas State out hit the Roadrunners .423 to .079. Calhoun had four kills on .800 hitting to lead the Bobcats in the set.
A back and forth rally carried on for most of the set with Weynand giving Texas State its first lead at 6-5. Jillian Wolpman registered the first solo block of the match to take the Bobcats up 16-14. Texas State kept a slight lead with kills by Middleton and Cave forcing UTSA to take a timeout at the 20-16 mark. UTSA attempted to make a comeback, but a Weynand kill gave Texas State a 25-21 win going into the third.
Things in the third set started out close, but errors continued to cloud UTSA in the third as Texas State went up 11-6. The Roadrunners could not catch a rhythm as Texas State continued to expand its lead with a 20-9 edge on the scoreboard. Middleton ended the match on a kill down the right side to give Texas State a 25-15 set win and the match.
Texas State outhit UTSA .382 to .118. The Bobcats registered 48 kills and 50 digs to round out the match. The Roadrunners collected 19 errors and just six blocks in the match.
UTSA drops to 11-18, 6-9 in the SLC. The Roadrunners were led by Briana Mason who tallied seven kills in .545 hitting.
Texas State heads to Corpus Christi on Saturday to play the Islanders at 2:00pm. This will be the last regular season match for the Bobcats as the Southland Conference Tournament begins next week. UTSA will host the tournament at the Convocation Center from Friday, Nov. 20-22.
