Volleyball Sweeps UTA on Dig Pink Night

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State volleyball beat visiting UT Arlington 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 31-29) tonight in front of a crowd full of pink fans supporting breast cancer research. The Bobcats improved to 7-11, 3-2 in SLC action tonight as Jessica Weynand led the way with 12 kills on .345 hitting.

Amber Calhoun chipped in 10 kills and four block assists for the highest hitting percentage of the night for the Bobcats with .368.

"We got a chance to play a lot of players. It's not a one man team; an overall great effort by the team tonight," said head coach Karen Chisum.

Weynand was on fire in the first set as she registered seven kills on .462 hitting. Texas State grabbed the first set, 25-23, after rallying back from a five-point deficit at 18-22. Four different Bobcats scored during the next seven points as Texas State won the set on a Melinda Cave service ace.

UTA managed to stay in the match for the majority of the second set, but 11-for-32 hitting did not help the cause as they fell, 18-25 to drop two sets to the Bobcats. Jillian Wolpman and AJ Watlington tallied three kills apiece in the set to help Texas State go into intermission needing just won more set win.

The third set saw 15 ties and nine lead changes before Texas State won the match at 31-29 to beat UTA. Calhoun had four kills (.500) in the third set, including serving the match winning point that came after a UTA attack error.

The Bobcats tallied 48 kills on .186 hitting, with 47 assists and 42 digs. The Lady Mavericks recorded 37 kills (.184), 34 assists and 47 digs.

Tara Frantz led the Lady Mavericks with 13 kills, while Raegan Daniel added 29 assists.

All proceeds collected tonight from the auction, pledges and donations will go directly to local breast cancer treatment and support organizations associated with Central Texas Medical Center.

Texas State will hit the floor again on Wednesday, Oct. 14 as it hosts Central Arkansas next week. The Bobcats will then travel to Natchitoches, La. on Saturday to play Northwestern State.
