SAN MARCOS - An early goal from senior Andrea Grifo put Texas State on the right track to take a 4-0 win over Sam Houston State Sunday afternoon at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. Texas State continues to lead the league standings with a 7-0-1 record and with the win, clinched part of the Southland Conference regular season title. The win also improves Texas State's current unbeaten streak to ten-straight games.
Sam Houston State falls to 7-8-2 overall and 4-3-0 in the Southland.
A cross from Jessica Lewis to Grifo in the 11th minute of action gave Texas State the early lead, but that would be all Sam Houston would give up in the first half. Bearkat keeper Jenny Pence recorded three saves and Texas State was held to seven shots.
The Bearkats were granted three corner kick opportunities, but Texas State's defense did not allow the foe a single shot.
"I knew it would be a hard game today and a hard battle for our team," said head coach Kat Conner. "The first half was very hard and I think we just wore them down in the second half and it worked to our advantage in the end."
Battling against a worn-out Sam Houston squad, Texas State held a 12-4 shot margin over the Bearkats and three fell in the net to propel the Bobcats win.
Britney Curry notched her 16th goal of the season in the 59th minute and six minutes later offered an assist to Taylor Person who brought the score to 3-0. Freshman Serena Hines netted Texas State final goal to seal the win at 79:22 from 10 yards out.
Mandi Mawyer recorded two saves on the day, while Pence walked away with seven.
The Bobcats will close out the 2009 regular season at home next Friday against UTSA. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and head coach Kat Conner will honor the seniors in special recognition ceremony.
