SAN MARCOS, Texas - AJ Watlington led Texas State to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-20) win over visiting Southeastern La. this afternoon at Strahan Coliseum. The Bobcats earn their third straight victory.
Amber Calhoun and Jessica Weynand both finished the day with eight kills, while Matti Schumacher added six.
The two teams traded points for the majority of the first set, until Texas State took the final lead at 19-18, with a kill by Melinda Cave. The Bobcats captured the set win 25-20 after hitting .345 to take the set from the Lady Lions.
The second set started off a little bit like the first set. Texas State started down two before grabbing a 6-3 lead forcing the Lady Lions to take a timeout and regroup. Texas State was able to take a 10-4 lead, but Southeastern La. battled back to tie the set at 19-All. Watlington smacked a kill down the Lady Lion right side to give the Bobcats a 20-19 edge. Texas State kept the lead, winning the set, 25-21. Watlington had four kills hitting .500 in the set to help boost the Bobcat offense that hit .174 for the set.
Brittany Collins served up three points to begin the third, pacing a Bobcat offense that never relinquished the lead. The Lady Lions were never close as Texas State hit .286 for the set, to win 25-20.
Texas State continued its winning ways over Southeastern La. as it now expands its win streak over the club to 10 and improved the all-time series record to 30-8.
The Bobcats collected 40 kills on .252 hitting to close out the match. Southeastern La. hit .122 with 34 kills.
The Lady Lions now fall to 6-14, 2-7 in the SLC. Arianne Cruckshanik had 25 assists and 10 digs for Southeastern La., while Julie Elliott had eight kills.
Texas State hits the road next week as they travel to Nacogdoches, Texas on Thursday, Oct. 29 to play Stephen F. Austin at 7:00pm. They will then head to Lake Charles, La. to play McNeese State on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 3:00pm.
