SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State rallied back against Central Arkansas after being down two sets to force the match to five, but dropped the last set 12-15falling 3-2 (18-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-19, 12-15). The Bobcats fall to 9-12, 3-3 in SLC action. Central Arkansas improved to 18-3, 7-0 in the SLC to remain unbeaten in league play.
Sophomore middle blocker Amber Calhoun and senior outside hitter Jessica Weynand led Texas State on the kills' board with 10 and 12, respectively. The Bobcats also got an added boost from freshman Matti Schumacher who registered six kills, five digs and three block assists. Junior setter Shelbi Irvin was all over the place as she recorded 32 assists and 19 digs for her third double-double of the season.
Chloe Smith led UCA in the first set as she helped the Sugar Bears to a 25-18 set win over the Bobcats. UCA outhit the Bobcats .353 to .160, collecting 16 kills to Texas State's eight.
The Bobcats entered intermission down two sets as they found themselves hitting .018 after two. Neither team hit above .100 in the set. After a 13-All tie the Sugar Bears managed to go on a 12 to five run taking the set, 25-18.
After being down six to 12, Texas State rallied to come to within one point of the Sugar Bears at 14-15, forcing UCA to call a timeout and slow things down. The Bobcats went up 21-18, with two block assists by Shelbi Irvin and Matti Schumacher and a kill by Schumacher to gain some momentum and the lead.
UCA tied the set again at 23, with a service ace by Amicha Williams. Jessica Weynand nailed a kill down the middle of the UCA side to take the edge 24-23. Calhoun slammed a kill off a UCA defender to send the ball in the stands and take the third set, 25-23.
Texas State went down 1-0 in the fourth before leading the entire set and moving the match to five. Weynand and Schumacher both had three kills in the set to help lead the Bobcats to a 25-19 set win.
With high energy from the previous two sets rolling into the fifth, Texas State came prepared to fight in the last. The Bobcats were able to stay within a three-point range for most of the set, but the Sugar Bears took the lead at 5-All and kept it. UCA won on a kill by Jessica Hays to grab a 15-12 win over the Bobcats.
The Bobcats finished the match with 45 kills on .145 hitting, for its fourth five-set loss of the season.
Smith led UCA with 25 kills and nine digs, while setter Robyn Smith tallied 47 assists.
The Sugar Bears have tied the all-time series at two matches apiece.
Texas State will play its next match on the road when it visits Northwestern State on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 2pm in Natchitoches, La. The Bobcats return home on Thursday, Oct. 22 to host Nicholls at 6:30pm.
