'Cats Stun Texas Tech in Three

TUCSON, Az. - `Cats take down Big 12 opponent Texas Tech in a three-set match at the Sheraton Four Points Arizona Invitational to beat the Red Raiders (25-22, 25-19, 25-20). Texas State improves its record to 4-3. The `Cats take on Santa Clara tomorrow morning in their last match of the tourney. Jessica Weynand led the Bobcats with 10 kills.

Brittany Collins had a solid day for the `Cats as she tallied 18 assists, three kills and three digs. Both Lawrencia Brown and Melinda Cave served up three service aces for Texas State.

Texas State fell down by eight with the scoreboard reading 8-14, before the tables started to turn. After four straight serves and two aces by Weynand, Texas State was able to pull to within two. A kill by Emily (Jones) WilkesJonesgave the Bobcats a 17-16 lead. The rest of the first set was a back and forth rally as the Bobcats came out on top to win by three.

The Bobcats won the second set by four as Texas Tech had an attack error to give Texas State the set point. Brown served seven set points to help the Bobcats. The second set was the Bobcats largest winning margin (six). Both teams gave up a good fight as they battled for every point the scoreboard showed.

In the last set it was a battle to the end as the set was neck-and-neck and never got to more than a five point margin until the Bobcats pulled away at the end with a kill by Jones Wilkes off an assist by Shelbi Irvin. Irvin served three straight points to pull the lead to 24-19, before Jones Wilkes made the kill.

Texas State was able to bring its hitting percentage up in tonight's game as they had .253 against the Red Raiders. Few errors and a solid game gave the Bobcats the win tonight.

Next up for the Bobcats will be Santa Clara at 10:00 a.m. MT. Santa Clara and Texas State last played each other in 1995. Texas State won that match-up 3-2.
