SAN MARCOS - Bobcat volleyball tops A&M-Corpus Christi 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-21) in first Southland Conference match of the season, bringing their overall record to 8-10 and 1-0 in SLC play. Emily Jones Wilkes led the way for Texas State with 12 kills (.500) and five blocks.
Texas State took the first set going up by 15 to run away with the set and take the lead one set to none. Jones Wilkes had five kills in the first set as the Bobcats were able to keep a steady rhythm. The Bobcats never fell behind by more than one point.
In the second, the Islanders tried to stay with the Bobcats. Texas State had a lot of energy the entire set winning by six. A multiple attack effort by the Bobcats paved the way for an intense set and a good win.
The third and final set was the closest of them all. Brittany Collins got things started with a service ace and Amber Calhoun finished the match with the winning kill. There were 16 ties and eight lead changes in the final match between the two teams. The Bobcats were able to take the edge and win by four.
Jessica Weynand had 11 kills and seven digs. Weynand had an attack average of .667 Brittany Collins had 34 assists in the match. Tonight was the third time Collins registered 30+ assists in a match.
The Bobcats will return to the floor again tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m., as they travel down the interstate to UTSA for their second SLC match.
Texas State swept the Roadrunners last season 2-0 winning the sets, 6-1. The Bobcats lead the all-time series 44-9, UTSA is 6-6, to begin the season.
