SAN MARCOS -
A fast-paced battle between the Texas State Bobcats and the Centenary Ladies came down to the combined efforts of Andrea Grifo and Erica Michaud, as the pair aided in the `Cats 1-0 victory Sunday afternoon at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
After splitting the pair of physical weekend matches, the Bobcats improve to 3-3-1 on the season with just a week of play remaining before their Southland Conference slate begins.
"Today we played a great game," said head coach Kat Conner. "Centenary is always a tough game. They are a well-coached team that plays hard for 90 minutes. If you settle during any of that time, they'll capitalize on it, so I'm glad we played hard for the full game and came away with the win."
Michaud's goal came in the 49th minute of play after a one-touch pass from Grifo placed the ball on the forwards toe 12 yards out. Michaud pressed towards the goal to draw Centenary keeper Kate Donnelly out and found an opening in the net. The goal marks Michaud's second of the season and Grifo recorded her second assist with pass.
"Our goal was vindictive of the way we played today," said Conner. "We were flying around at full speed and never stopped. Erica (Michaud) pushed to the goal and never gave up on the play."
Despite holding the edge over Centenary, Texas State attempted 15 more shots, including eight on goal, trying to spread the margin. Britney Curry fired three shots-on-goal, while newcomer Kelsey Bernard had two attempts.
The Bobcats defense held Centenary to just five shots throughout the match. Katie Valdez recorded the Ladies one shot-on-goal in the eighth minute of the game. Jessica Elting broke a try in the 58th minute with a stellar effort protecting the box.
Texas State will continue its string of home games next Friday and Sunday, hosting Baylor and Houston Baptist. First kicks are slated for 7 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. and will wrap up the `Cats preseason slate.
SLC competition begins October 3 against McNeese State in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
