Late Game Heroics Give Bobcat Football a Win on the Road

GREELEY, Colo. - A fumble recovery by Texas State at the one yard line with 19.2 seconds to go on the clock sealed the game for the Bobcats. A 29-yard field goal by Andrew Ireland gave the Bobcats the lead with 2:11 left in the game. Texas State beat Northern Colorado on the road, 38-35 to bring its overall record to 2-1.

Northern Colorado's Brandon Smith had an 80-yard run for a touchdown on the first play of the game to give the Bears a 7-0 lead to start the quarter.

Clint Toon made a 30-yard completion to tailback Alvin Canady with 9:50 left to go in the first half to tie the game at 7-7. The touchdown marked Canady's first of the season.

The Bobcats forced a fumble at the Bears 25-yard line, with safety Brian Williams recovering the ball. On the next drive senior wide receiver Cameron Luke caught a 15-yard pass bringing the `Cats to the 10-yard line. True freshman running back Mishak Rivas had a three-yard gain for Texas State that set up another Canady touchdown for a three-yard run, giving the Bobcats a 14-7 lead with 7:23 to go in the first quarter.

Junior linebacker Joe Bell had an interception with 7:15 to go on the clock, returning the ball for a 26-yard touchdown. It was Bell's first career interception. With the Bobcats receiving two penalties equaling 30-yards early in the second, the Bears scored off an 8-yard run to tie the game at 21.

An interception by Morris Crosby with 10:35 to go in the second, gave the `Cats the ball at the Bears 31-yard line. Luke completed a 20-yard catch that set up an 11-yard run for Stan Zwinggi; for his first touchdown of the year and 14th of his career.

With the `Cats leading 28-21 after the half they began the second half with a Courtney Smith interception at the Bobcat five for a five yard gain with eight minutes to go in the third quarter. The interception is Smith's first of his career. Canady had a five-yard touchdown run for his third on the day, to give the Bobcats a 35-28 lead with 0:20 to go in the third. The Bears responded with a 75-yard touchdown catch to tie the game at the end of the third.

Rivas had two catches with 43 yards to finish the game. Zwinggi had16 carries for 109 yards, while Canady had eight catches and 11 rushes for 83 all-purpose yards. Smith had nine and a half tackles, one sack, one interception and the game changing forced fumble to complete the day.

Toon made his first start at quarterback today, completing 18 passes on 32 attempts for 227 yards and a touchdown. Today marked the third straight game this season where Toon has passed for 100+ yards and his fourth overall. He also threw for 200+ yards for the second straight game this season. He made completions to seven different receivers in today's game.

Luke finished the day with four catches for 70 yards, extending his receiving streak to 13 games. With a total of 1,414 career yards, Luke has now moved up to No. 7 on the Texas State all-time career receiving yards list.

Texas State had 23 first down conversions, to Northern Colorado's 29. The Bobcats led in yards rushing 180-176. Texas State took the edge in possession time with 31:51-28:09.

The Bobcats return to the field next weekend as they will play at home against Southern Utah at 6:00 p.m.CT.
