AUSTIN, Texas - In the last match of the Time Warner Cable Tournament for the Bobcats, Texas State lost to the University of Houston in five sets. The Bobcats had four players recording double-doubles in Jessica Weynand, Lawrencia Brown, Brittany Collins and Melinda Cave.
Brittany Collins got Texas State off to a good start as she served three straight points for the Bobcats to give them an early lead. Texas State brought the score to 10-5 in its favor before forcing Houston to take a timeout. A double block by Weynand and Amber Calhoun brought the score to 13-7. Calhoun responded on the next play with a kill of her own to make her 25th kill of the season and spread the Bobcat lead to seven. Weynand got the kill on a set point after a Houston blocking error to end the first set, 25-19 giving Texas State a 1-0 lead and a .344 attack percentage.
The second set started off a little closer than the first one as the set had its first tie at 4-4. It was a back-and-forth point set for the two teams as they had six ties and three lead changes in the second. A Weynand kill gave the Bobcats a 14-13 lead in the set. The Bobcats called a timeout at 16-14, down by two to regroup themselves. Texas State brought the set to within one with the score reading 21-20, Cougars. With the set at a steady battling pace Houston was ahead 24-23 and after a Texas State rally, the Cougars called a timeout. A Bobcat service error ended the set bringing the score to 1-1.
Texas State fell behind early in the third set, 7-3, after a few Bobcat attacking errors. The Bobcats brought the score up to 8-13 off a Weynand kill. A double block by Melinda Cave and Calhoun applied pressure to the Cougars. Houston was able to capitalize on a Bobcat attack percentage of .200 to win the set 25-17.
The Bobcats got off to a smooth start in the fourth regaining some of the momentum from the first set, getting out to a 5-2 lead. Cave knocked one down from far right to give the Bobcats a one point lead over the Cougars at 10-9. The Bobcats stretched the lead to 18-14 before Houston called a timeout. Texas State came away with the win in the fourth as they kept the lead the entire set and finish with a 25-19 tally.
In the last and final set of the match both teams refused to give up. Calhoun made a critical solo block as she gave the Bobcats a 4-3 edge over the Cougars. On a Cave kill the teams switched sides with Texas State up, 8-7. Going down to the last wire, Houston took the last set to the very end coming away with the match, 15-13.
Weynand finished the match with 18 kills and 15 digs. Brown had 14 kills and 12 digs, while Collins had 45 assists and 10 digs.Cave had 16 kills and 10 digs for her first double-double of the season. She was also named to the all-tournament team for her high perormance throughout the tourney.
Texas State will return home for its next match as they will play the Prairie View A&M Panthers at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at Strahan Coliseum. The two teams last met in 1988, where the Bobcats won 3-0.
