AUSTIN, Texas - In the I-35 showdown, Texas State fell to the third ranked University of Texas in four (10-25, 12-25, 25-17, 13-25). The Bobcats are now 0-1 in the Time Warner Cable Invitational. Jessica Weynand led all Bobcats with eight kills and 10 digs.
The Bobcats got off to a rough start in the first set falling behind, 8-0. Weynand got the Bobcats on the board first with a kill to the left side line. AJ Watlington had an ace in the beginning of the set to give the `Cats three points and some momentum. Amy Weigle got up high with a solo block to bring the score to within five. Texas State was forced to burn two timeouts in order to regroup and get back into the set. The `Cats fell in the first set, 25-10; after recording their lowest set attack percentage all season.
Texas State tied the second set 1-1 after a Lawrencia Brown kill. Lack of blocking by the `Cats saw them down in the set once again. Weynand was able to get a kill in deep left to give Texas State a point and capitalize on Longhorn errors. With errors occurring on both sides the set score was 25-12 in favor of the Longhorns.
An Amber Calhoun dig and a Brown serve gave Texas State the first lead of the match, 3-1. Texas State was able to go up 5-2 before forcing the Longhorns to take a timeout. The Bobcats biggest lead of the third set was nine. After bringing the score to 9-4, the `Cats forced the Longhorns to take another timeout; Weynand's ace brought the lead to five. A Melinda Cave and Calhoun block brought the lead back up to six and the score to 14-8. Calhoun responded again with a solo block in the next play for a 15-8 lead. The Longhorns were slowly falling apart in the third set as the `Cats were sure to take advantage. With the `Cats leading 23-16, Texas State took a timeout to talk strategy. With a Longhorn digging error, the `Cats stole one from the Longhorns (25-17) to bring the match to set number four. Texas State had an attack percentage of .280 in the third set, where as the Longhorns percentage was .065.
Texas State entered the fourth set with tons of energy, but with minor mistakes that hurt them. Down by four at the start they were forced to call a timeout. The `Cats caught a rhythm and were able to get back into the swing of things. Despite a hard fought battle the `Cats dropped the fourth set 25-13.
Calhoun had five total kills and three in the third set to help give the Bobcats the win. Brittany Collins had 18 assists and seven digs on the night.
The `Cats will be back in action tomorrow morning as they continue play in the Time Warner Cable Invitational. Texas State is scheduled to play the University of Georgia at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning. In the `Cats last match of the tourney on Friday they will play the University of Houston.
