Final Stats
SAN MARCOS- The Texas State volleyball team won both its matches this afternoon against Sacramento State and UT Pan American to finish the CenturyTel Premier 3-1 and come away with a second place finish in its home tourney. Senior Lawrencia Brown and Sophomore Melinda Cave were named to the CenturyTel all-tournament team.
The University of Miami won the tournament and took home the CenturyTel Premier trophy as they went 4-0 through the tournament. Genny Mayhew was named most valuable player of the tournament for the Hurricanes.
Three double-doubles by the Bobcats gave Texas State the edge against Sacramento State as they beat the Hornets in five sets (25-20, 25-15, 21-25, 22-25, 15-11). Outside hitters Jessica Weynand and Lawrencia Brown both posted double-doubles. Weynand had 18 kills and 11 digs, while Brown had 14 kills and 13 digs. Brittany Collins who came rolling off her energy from the night before as she collected 32 assists and 14 digs against the Hornets, for her first double-double of the season.
Cave had an attack average of .444 as she tallied 14 kills on 27 attempts, plus four digs and four blocks.
In the Bobcats final match of the tournament Texas State beat UTPA in three sets. The Bobcats won by a total of nine points through all three sets. Cave served two service aces to give Texas State a 26-24 advantage and the win. Cave posted an average of .427 on the day. Brown combined for 23 kills and 32 digs on day the last day of the tournament.
Brown had 18 digs and nine kills against UTPA coming close to another double-double on the day. Freshman Amber Calhoun and senior Emily (Jones) WilkesJonesboth tallied two solo blocks and combined for eight of Texas State's 12 blocks.
Texas State will be back in action Tuesday night, Sept. 2 at 7:00 p.m. as they take on the Baylor Bears.
