SAN MARCOS -
The Texas State Bobcats scored 11 runs over two innings, overwhelming the Texas Tech Red Raiders and eventually pulled off a 14-3 victory over the downtrodden team Saturday night at Bobcat Field. The `Cats improve to 6-4 in their non-conference slate and with the loss, Tech moves to an even 6-6 record.
Texas State jumped on the board in the first inning, with Thomas Field leading off the game with a single through the left side and shifted to the scoring corner on a wild pitch from Tech's Nathan Karnes. A second error from the mound sent Field across the plate for the `Cats first tally.
The Bobcats held the Red Raiders to just two hits throughout their first five frames and forced Tech to leave two runners on base. The foe did not score until the fifth inning, when Chris Hall knocked a sacrifice fly to right field to send Taylor Ashby home.
With a tie game at hand, Texas State countered with a seven-run slot to go over the edge. Lance Loftin recorded the first hit of the frame through the right field gap and scored on a single from Adam Witek that placed the ball in nearly the same spot. A laboring effort from the Raider mound walked four Bobcats for an easy run, forcing a pitching change for the Red and Black. Brian Cloud entered the game and Paul Goldschmidt batted in two runs with a single up the middle to keep the `Cats hot streak alive.
Ben Theriot sliced a double up the middle for an RBI and Jerry Cervantes sent him home with a shot to centerfield. The Raiders retired the fifth inning with back-to-back strikeouts, hoping to escape an 8-1 overwhelming margin set by the Bobcats in their next at-bat.
The `Cats held the Red Raiders to just two runs over the eighth and ninth inning and tacked on six more to their tally to close out the game.
Steven Siers carried the `Cats for 7.0 innings, allowing just three hits and one run during his tenure. Karns took the loss for Texas Tech in his 4.1 innings on the mound. The `Cats posted six earned runs with the hurler on the mound and recorded five hits. The Raiders shifted through six pitchers before the night was over.
For the game, Texas State managed a 15-6 hitting margin over Texas Tech. Jonathan Farrow tallied four RBI in the victory, going 1-for-3 with a three-run homer in the sixth inning.
Theriot went 3-for-4 in the contests, with one RBI and Thomas Field went 2-for-4, scoring four runs and notching one RBI.
