Texas State Drops 6-1 Match at Lamar

March 8, 2008

BEAUMONT - Ashley Ellis won a tense third game by a 10-8 score in the No. 3 position, but it proved to be the lone win for Texas State as the Bobcat women's tennis team (3-5, 1-2 SLC) lost 6-1 at Lamar on Saturday.

The Cardinals swept the doubles point for an early 1-0 edge before Andrea Martinez defeated Andrea Giraldo 0-6, 1-6 in the top singles spot. Rabea Hartmann looked to cut the deficit in half, but came up just short in another long game three tiebreaker. After taking the second set 6-1 to even her singles match, Hartmann fell to Mariayeni Gutierrez 7-10 in the third set to put the Bobcats in a deep hole.

Ellis came back with her point for her second straight win at the No. 3 position, but Lainy Chafitz was forced to retire in the second set of her match against Maria Gutierrez to clinch the win for Lamar.

In the No. 5 singles, Lamar's Manijee Ashrafi defeated Ali Gulida in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 while Texas State's Sumarie Muller lost 5-7, 4-6 in the sixth spot.

Texas State continues its eastern swing on Sunday against McNeese State.
