Final Stats
SAN MARCOS -
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, Aaron Fuller crossed the plate to tie the game at Lupton Stadium and force extra frames. The Texas State Bobcats held TCU for nearly two more appearances at the plate, but a single up the middle gave the Horned Frogs the victory and the Bobcats fell 4-3 Wednesday night. The `Cats are now 4-4 in their non-conference schedule.
Thomas Field reached base on a walk to open the game, but the Bobcats recorded back-to-back outs in the following at-bats. In the clutch, Jonathan Farrow popped up to third base but TCU's Matt Carpenter lost the ball in the lights for a base hit. Laurn Randell was next at the plate, but Paul Gerrish walked his second Bobcat of the night. With the bases loaded, Ben Theriot placed the ball in shallow centerfield to send Field and Farrow across the plate for the `Cats first-inning tally.
Kane Holbrooks saw his first-career start against the Horned Frogs, retiring the side to close out the frame for a 2-0 Bobcat lead.
Texas State held on to the margin until the bottom of the fourth inning when TCU trimmed the lead by one and Aaron Taylor was sent to the mound to close out the inning. The Frogs added another mark to tie the game in the fifth when Clint Arnold scored on a wild pitch after reaching base on a double to open the inning.
The foe took the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Bryan Holaday was walked by Kyle Gembler and shifted to third base on a throwing error from the field. The Frog crossed on a sac bunt for three-straight scoring frames for TCU.
The Bobcats came back and put the tying run on third base in the top of the eighth inning, when Randell advanced on a wild pitch after reaching on a single through the left side and stealing second base.
The Horned Frogs put runners on second and first in the bottom of the frame, but Josh Walter took the mound and retired the inning on a strikeout, leaving the two on base.
After two intense extra innings, Eric Weaver loaded the bases for the force out and Brett Medlin singled to left field for his first hit of the night and sent the game-winning run home.
Ben Theriot went 2-for-5 and drove in the lone two RBI for the night. Jonathan Farrow went 3-for-4 in the outing and scored one run.
Texas State went through nine pitchers in the outing, with Weaver taking his first loss. Holbrooks finished throwing 3.2 innings, allowing three hits and one run and tallying three strikeouts.
Eric Marshall was awarded the win for TCU after holding the Bobcats for 2.0 innnings.
Texas State will take a one-day break before returning to the field to host Northern Illinois in a four-game series at Bobcat Field that will feature a doubleheader Sunday afternoon. Friday night's game is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
