Huntsville, Tx. - After playing one of their best halves of the season and holding a six-point advantage at halftime, the Texas State men's basketball team was held to just 29 points in the second period and fell 80-74 at Sam Houston State Saturday night in Huntsville, Texas.

The Bobcats opened the game shooting 61 percent from the field and forced Sam Houston State into nine turnovers to take a 45-39 lead into the halftime locker room.

Brandon Bush scored eight of his 14 points in the opening period and Ty Gough added seven points and a blocked shot before picking up his second foul to lead Texas State.

The Bearkats opened the second half 9-0 run to take a 46-45 lead with 16:20 left to play. The half began with Ryan Bright and Komas Kvedys each scoring a lay-up off an offensive rebound and Shamir McDaniel adding a three-point shot from the top of the key.

Texas State falls to 5-10 in Southland Conference action and 12-16 overall.

Texas State began the game with a 9-3 run before Ryan Bright scored three points with a lay-up and free throw and Jeremy Thomas added a three-point basket to pull Sam Houston State to within 11-9.

After Brandon Bush nailed a three-point shot for the Bobcats, Thomas made another trey and John Gardiner added a lay-up to tie the score at 14-14.

Texas State used a 13-5 run to take a 27-19 lead when Gough scored a lay-up with 9:38 left in the opening period.

The Bobcats led by as many as 10 points twice in the period, including 45-35 with 1:42 left to play in the first half when Ryan White nailed a jump shot from the left wing.

Sam Houston State scored the final four points in the first half on Barkley Falkner's free throw and Ashton Mitchell's three-point basket in the final 47 seconds of the period.

"We did a good job of getting some transition baskets in the first half," Texas State head coach Doug Davalos said. "When you play well in the first half, you go into halftime and say that you might want to do this better or do that a little better.But we abandoned the things that got us the lead."

Sam Houston State outscored the Bobcats 9-0 in the first six minutes of the second period to take a 48-45 lead.

"They set the tone early in the second half when they scored a lay-up after grabbing three offensive rebounds on the very first play," Davalos said.

Despite the slow start, the Bobcats fought back into contention. With Sam Houston State leading 57-48 with 11:48 left to play, Texas State used a 12-3 rally to take a 63-60 on Dylan Moseley's three-point shot with 6:57 left to play.

Following a lay-up by Bush that put Texas State up 65-63, John Gardiner scored three points on a lay-up and free throw to give the Bearkats a 66-65 lead with 3:35 left to play.

Sam Houston State outscored the Bobcats 14-3 the rest of the way to win its 21st game of the season. Texas State fell to 12-16 overall this season and 5-10 in Southland Conference play.

Bush led Bobcats with 14 points and eight rebounds and Ty Gough went 3-5 from the field, aiding in his nine point-six rebound night.

Bright posted a double-double with 17 points and ten rebounds as the high scorer for Sam Houston State.

The Bobcats closes out the regular season at Strahan Coliseum on Saturday, March 8 at 4 p.m. The school will honor its three senior players in a Senior Appreciation Ceremony for Matt Fullenwider, Brent Holder and Brandon Thomas.
