Final Stats
Austin, TX. -
Jonathan Farrow batted in three runs in the top of the sixth inning with a shot over the right field fence to bring the Texas State Bobcats out of a seven-run pit, but the No. 18 Texas Longhorns had staked their claim and took a 9-6 victory away from a fighting Bobcat club Tuesday night at Disch-Falk Field.
Texas State falls to 10-6 overall, while UT improves to 14-5.
"We have some fighters on our team," said head coach Ty Harrington. "Our guys are young and it takes a lot to come into this venue and face this caliber of a team, but we responded very well and it just shows that our program is certainly growing in the right direction."
A 4-0 mark across the top three innings did not lull the battling Bobcats and a fourth inning lift started with a base hit to right field from Jerry Cervantes. The hitter stole his first base of the season to edge closer to the plate and a hard hit by Thomas Field put `Cats on the corners for Adam Witek. On his first hit of the night, Witek launched a ball to left field, bouncing perfectly inside the line to send Cervantes and Field across the plate for a 4-2 ball game.
The Longhorns matched the two runs in the bottom of the fourth and drove in three more in the following frame to ward off any threats of a Texas State comeback on a 9-2 margin, but the plan was foiled.
With two outs and a familiar scenario of runners on the corners, Farrow took his spot at the plate and sent Pat McCrory's pitch well over the right field wall for a three-run homer, his fourth of the season, to put Texas State back within reach of claiming the lead.
Ben Theriot scored in the top of the seventh inning for the final tally of the night and a three-run fringe would be the closest the `Cats would come to the hosting `Horns.
Cervantes led the team at the plate with three hits, while scoring one run. Farrow went 2-for-4 in the outing, with three RBI and a solo run. Field grabbed a set of hits and runs for Texas State.
Kane Holbrooks was handed his second loss of the season after pitching 3.0 innings for Texas State. Holbrooks allowed four runs, all of which were earned, off seven hits and struck out three Longhorns for the final line.
Hunter Hill was credited with the save for Texas and Brandon Belt earned his first win after shifting from first base to close out on the mound. Belt held Texas State in his 2.0 innings on the mound, as well as going 3-for-4 on the night with a five RBI tally.
Texas State will return to Southland Conference action when they host a three-game series with Texas-Arlington beginning Thursday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
