Seven straight scoring innings for the Nicholls State Colonels was just too much for the Texas State Bobcats to overcome, despite recording 17 hits on the night and the `Cats fell 12-10 at Didier Field Saturday afternoon in Thibodaux, La. The teams fell in its first conference loss of the season, shifting its league record to 1-1 and dropping the overall standing to 9-5.
In a change of pace from game one, Texas State put up a quick four runs in the first inning to take the lead. A triplet of base hits loaded the diamond for Jonathan Farrow who carried his pitch to left center field, plating Thomas Field, Adam Witek and Laurn Randell, but stopping on the scoring corner. The slugger was sent home on the next at-bat by Paul Goldschmidt's single to right field.
Texas State went scoreless in the second and third frame and Nicholls State slowly chipped away at the margin with one run apiece in the first and second inning and two in the third to tie the game.
Goldschmidt put the Bobcats back on top in the fourth inning with a double down the left field line to score Witek and shift Farrow to the scoring corner. Both batters reached on singles. Lance Loftin plated two more on a long shot to left field, sending Goldschmidt and Farrow across the plate, but the scoring tally ended as he was called out on a throw from third base to second to retire the inning.
The lead switched hands again in the bottom of the sixth when Nicholls State struck on four hits to score five runs to damage the Bobcats on the scoreboard.
Texas State entered the ninth inning trailing 12-9 and had one out when Field and Witek knocked a pair of base hits to reach base. Randell was hit by a pitch to put runners at all posts and Farrow put a sacrifice fly out to center field for a two-run game. With the tying run on base, Dale Dickerson struck out Goldschmidt to give the Colonels their first SLC victory.
Witek tied a school record for most hits recorded in a game with his 5-for-5 outing in today's game. The mark was set by John Tompkins in March of 1999.
Kane Holbrooks took the loss for Texas State, giving up five earned runs off four hits in his 2.0 innings on the mound.
Jake Parrish earned the win for NSU and Parish grabbed the save. Both hurlers threw for two innings, and limited the bobcats to just five hits and three runs combined.
The final game of the series is scheduled to begin a 1 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
