With two outs in the ninth inning, Jonathan Farrow, who had notched two home runs earlier in the afternoon, took his spot at the plate. A passed ball took an unfortunate jump for Texas State and the `Cats were caught stealing to retire their comeback rally, falling to the New Mexico Lobos 11-10 in Game Two of the series at Bobcat Field Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats opened strong, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the early lead. Willy Kesler struggled on the mound, walking Field to lead off the inning and eventually plating the short stop due to a passed ball and a wild pitch. Laurn Randell was hit by a pitch in his at-bat and scored on an error by short that also allowed Theriot to reach base. Leaving no room for error, Farrow blasted the first pitch over the left center wall for two RBI, giving the `Cats a 4-0 lead.
New Mexico posted three hits in the following inning, but did not capitalize until the third frame. With two outs Drew McDonald singled up the middle to send Matt Hibbitts across the plate. Hibbitts reached on a double to the left line.
In the top of the fifth, Lobo bats began to move and the team posted three runs over Texas State to tie the game and took the lead in the following frame with a four-run blast.
Texas State was held without a run until the seventh inning. After the Lobos tacked on two more runs, rally caps hoisted the Bobcats up for five runs to trim the growing margin. Taking advantage of two Lobo pitching changes, Spenser Dennis scored after five consecutive walked batters. Cox was brought in to close and Farrow reiterated his power behind the bat. For his second home run of the afternoon, Farrow blasted a grand slam over the center wall for four RBI.
The `Cats held UNM to just one run over the final two innings, but their comeback at the plate was yet to be finished. Adam Witek singled to open the final frame, but was out on a fielder's choice that put Randell on base. Ben Theriot doubled to center field and brought Randell home, and Jason Martinson was brought in for speed on the bases as Farrow was next at bat.
As the catcher signaled for the intentional walk, a passed ball sent Martinson to third base, but the catcher threw a line to the corner to cut the Bobcats rally short.
New Mexico ended with 19 hits, more than doubling Texas State's eight-hit rally. The Bobcats left four runners on base, while the Lobos stranded 11.
Farrow and Witek went 2-4 at the plate, scoring two and one run, respectively. Randell scored a game-high three runs, while Farrow picked up a career-best six RBI.
Steven Siers took the loss for Texas State, giving up 11 hits ad five runs, all of which were earned. Siers struck out five of his 23 batters faced.
Willy Kesler earned the win for New Mexico, pitching a solid 6.0 innings, allowing five hits and four runs with just one earned. Cox notched the save in his three innings, allowing just two runs, both earned. Both Kesler and Cox picked up two strikeouts.
The Lobos now lead the series 2-0, with the final game played out tomorrow at 1 p.m.
