BEAUMONT, Texas-In what was a match for the fans to see, Texas State fell to Lamar on the road in a grueling four sets (27-25, 18-25, 24-26, 24-26). In down to the wire sets the Bobcats fell in the last two sets of a combined four points, suffering only their second loss in Southland Conference play. Texas State now falls to 18-13, 11-2 SLC. Lamar improves to 12-9, 10-2 SLC.
With a back-to-back point rally Jessica Weynand got things going taking the set from 6-6 to a three point lead stretch, while serving three straight Bobcat points taking the match to 9-6, Texas State. Lawrencia Brown recorded a solo block to move the score to 12-9 Bobcats. With a Lamar blocking error and the score at 15-11 in the Bobcats favor, the Cardinals took a timeout.
With the set tied 20-all an error by both teams saw the set tied again for the next three points. Lamar took a one point lead forcing the Bobcats to take a timeout. Texas State rebounded with two straight points to take a 25-24 lead. A service error by Ally Buitron, followed by a kill by Brown gave the Bobcats a 26-25 edge, forcing the Cardinals to take their second timeout of the set. A block assist by Emily Jones Wilkes and AJ Watlington brought the set to an end and gave Texas State the set win.
A block solo by Jones Wilkes got the second set going as the Bobcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Errors in the next few serves saw the Bobcats down 18-11. Texas State rallied back to bring the score to 17-23, but fell 25-18 in the second.
In the third set the Bobcats scored the first point off a Lamar service error but soon dropped 1-4. The score soon became tied 6-6 on a Cardinal attack error. Jones Wilkes connected on a kill to the dead center as to bring the Bobcats to within one with the score, 11-10. A setting error by Lamar brought the match tied at 11-all. Watlington and Jones Wilkes connected on their second block assist of the night to bring the score 13-all.
At 18-18, Brown dropped a soft kill on the Cardinals to take the lead. With a diving save Weynand helped fuel a Texas State offense that was far from empty to give the Bobcats a two-point advantage. A block solo by Jones Wilkes brought the Bobcats to a 24-22 lead. Attack and receiving errors by the Bobcats saw them drop the third set 26-24 in the final points.
Brown started the fourth set off with a kill. The set was soon tied at 4-all before moving to a 9-7 lead off a Weyanand ace. Melinda Caved knocked down a kill followed by an ace to give the Bobcats a 12-9 lead. The Cardinals started a surge which gave them a 16-12 advantage over the Bobcats.
Coming out of a timeout Watlington knocked down a kill for the Bobcats and added a Lamar attack error to give the Bobcats two quick points. Texas State scored four straight points forcing the Cardinals to call a timeout with the Bobcats down by two.
Jones Wilkes drilled a kill to the line for a Bobcat point to bring it to 22-20, Bobcats down by two. A Cardinal attack error brought the set to 23-24, followed by an Amy Weigle kill. In what seemed like a never ending rally, Lamar got the break and ended up with the kill. In a match winning kill by the Lamar's Shalayne Blythe, the match ended with the Cardinals getting the edge, 26-24.
Weynand led all Bobcats with 14 kills and 16 digs, while Brown had 10 kills and 15 kills. Brittany Collins had 27 assists and 11 digs and Shelbi Irvin had 16 assists and 13 digs.
Up next for the Bobcats will be the Bearkats of Sam Houston State, tomorrow at 4:00pm CT in Huntsville, TX.
Last time out against Sam Houston State, the Bobcats beat the Bearkats, 3-1. Jones Wilkes and Amy Weigle both hit .467 with seven kills each; neither one having an error. Weigle had three block assists and Jones Wilkes had four block assists and one block solo. Brown led all players with 12 kills and eight digs.
