Women's Team Places Third, Men Seventh at SLC Cross Country Championships

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Senior Tenley Determan led the Texas State women's cross country team to a third place finish, while the men placed seventh this morning at the Southland Conference Cross Country Championships being held at Piney Woods Country Club in Nacogdoches, Texas.

In the women's race A&M-Corpus Christi scored 49 points, 12 points better than Stephen F. Austin, which scored 61 points as the Lumberjack men and women each finished as the runner-up in their respective race. The Islanders, which have won the last two conference championship meets, had three finishers in the top 10 and placed their top five runners in the top 15.

Determan placed fourth overall with a time of 22:10 in the 6k race to garner All-SLC honors. Right behind her was junior Heather Bullin who also earned All-SLC honors finishing fifth in a time of 22:23. Rounding out the top five for the Bobcats were sophomore Amanda McKinney placing 21st with a time of 23:23, Sandra Venegas was 30th with a time of 23:43 and Kelly Butler finished in a time of 23:56.

In the men's race, A&M-Corpus Christi edged UT Arlington by just one point for third place, 130-129. Sam Houston State and UTSA finished in the top half of the conference. McNeese State and Texas State each scored 151 points to tie for seventh place and were followed by Southeastern Louisiana, Central Arkansas, Northwestern State and Nicholls State.

The men's team tied for seventh place at SLC Championships with Jonathan Hernandez leading the way, He finished the 8k race first for the Bobcats as he crossed the line in a time of 26:21. Roel Elizalde was second for the Bobcats with 26:33. The next three finishers for Texas State were Michael Richards (26:59), Michael Morris (27:19) and Hugo Corral (27:25).

All runners placing in the top-10 earn All-Southland Conference honors.
