NACOGDOCHES, Texas- Texas State volleyball advances to the Southland Conference Championship match after beating Sam Houston State 3-1, (27-29, 25-20, 25-12, 25-15) at William R. Johnson Coliseum in Nacogdoches, Texas. The Bobcats will be making their tenth appearance in the championship.
Tomorrow at 2pm the No.1 seeded Bobcats will take on the No. 2 Lamar Cardinals in the SLC Championship match.
The Bobcats started the first set off a little slow as the Bearkats were ahead 3-0, before Texas State got on the board with an Emily Jones Wilkes kill to the Bearkat middle. Texas State took a timeout to talk things through with the score reading 6-11, in favor of the Bearkats. Amy Weigle had back-to-back kills to bring the Bobcats to within four. A Melinda Cave service ace changed the score to, 9-12.
With the set tied at 23-All Texas State had a service ace to give Sam Houston State the next point. From that point on the two teams traded points the rest of the way through. Finally, on a Bobcat attacking error the Bearkats took the set, 29-27.
Texas State jumped out to a 5-2 lead to begin the fifth with a Jessica Weynand kill. Weynand had five kills in the set, while the team had five blocks. AJ Watlington and Weynand served a combined 14 Bobcat points in the second. Texas State was able to hold the Bearkats to a .038 hitting average and just one block in the set. Texas State edged the Bearkats, 25-21, to take the second set.
At 6-2 in the third, Sam Houston State called a timeout to slow things down. A Jones Wilkes/Lawrencia Brown combo block gave the Bobcats a six point lead. Watlington added a kill of her own to increase the Bobcat lead at 13-6. Before you knew it the Bobcats had a ten point stretch at 17-7. The Bobcats continued to outscore the Bearkats as they took the set, 25-12, with an amazing hitting percentage of .667.
With the match at a high intensity the Bobcats carried the momentum from the last two sets into the fourth. The Bobcats seemed to be at their peak, finding any and every opening possible on the Bearkat side to nail the ball down. The Bearkats called a timeout at 21-12, but it did not slow down the Bobcats as they turned on the heat winning, 25-15.
Amy Weigle led all Bobcats with 16 kills (.519). She is currently leading the SLC tourney with overall hitting percentage. Second in the tourney in hitting percentage is Watlington, who tonight had nine kills (.615) and 11 digs; one short of a double-double.
Posting double digits in the kill category were Weynand and Brown. Weynand finished with 12 kills and seven digs. Brown tallied 12 kills and five digs.
Texas State hit a .391 hitting average today, for 61 kills; almost double the amount of Sam Houston State who had 35.
