SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Texas State volleyball team beat visiting UT Arlington 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-12) tonight in their annual Dig for the Cure match. The night was a success as the Bobcats earned a win and celebrated breast cancer awareness at the same time. Texas State improves to 16-12, 9-1 SLC, while UTA falls to 5-19, 1-9 SLC.
With pink hair ties and pink shoe laces the Bobcats took control in the first set and never let up. The Mavericks could not score over 14 points the whole night.
With a set hitting percentage of .458 the Bobcats continued with a heavy momentum and beat the Mavericks 25-10 in the second. The Mavericks seemed to never catch a rhythm as they were -.160 in the set.
Coming out of intermission the Bobcats found the strength to continue their fight and win the last set 25-12 for their seventh straight SLC win.
Texas State recorded their second highest team hitting percentage tonight as they finished with a final average of .406. The Bobcats were able to hold UT Arlington to .037. Tonight was the third straight match that Texas State was able to hold their opponents to under .100.
Jessica Weynand led all Bobcats with 14 kills (.423) and nine digs. Both Emily Jones Wilkes and Lawrencia Brown recorded eight kills. Jones Wilkes added three assists and two blocks, while Brown had 10 digs. Five different Bobcats had a .400 hitting average or better.
The volleyball team held a silent auction, had a best pink outfit contest and honored breast cancer survivors during the evening. Over 1,000 fans came out to celebrate breast cancer awareness and cheer the Bobcats on.
More volleyball action will continue on Thursday night at 7:00pm CT when the Bobcats face Stephen F. Austin. SFA is currently the SLC West Division leader, while Texas State is the East Division leader.
