Final Stats
San Antonio, Texas -
It was a close match by all standards Sunday afternoon that left the Texas State Bobcats in a 1-1 draw with the UTSA Roadrunners in the I-35 Rivalry match at the UTSA Rec Sports Complex.
Texas State moves to 9-3-4 overall and 5-0-2 in Southland Conference action, while UTSA sits at 7-9-1 and 4-2-1, respectively.
From early on, UTSA pressured the Bobcat offense, posting an 8-5 margin in the first period of regulation. The Roadrunners jumped out to an early lead in the 13th minute of play when Ally Dillon took a shot that was deflected by junior Mandi Mawyer. At 12:44, Veronica Najera was there to catch ricochet right off Mawyer's hands and tapped in the game-leading goal for UTSA.
Texas State kept the battle close in the remaining minutes, attempting three of its five shots on goal after the score. As the first regulation came to a close, Nikki Kinard found Erica Michaud with a corner kick outside of the box, but Michaud's attempt was turned away by Nicoline Joergensen, giving UTSA the 1-0 lead into the half.
Following the intermission, Texas State bounced backed with fire, outshooting UTSA 8-2, with four shots falling on goal. The persistence paid off at 66:55 when Britney Curry netted the equalizer on an unassisted goal from 15 yards out that flew into the net out of Joergensen's reach.
The goal marks Curry's tenth of the season, surpassing last year's career tally, and placing her No. 3 in the all-time records for most goals scored in a season.
Following the tie goal, Texas State was granted three-straight corner kicks. At 72:27, Jessica Lewis caught the well-placed remains of one and slapped in the game-winning attempt, however Joergensen ended the surge with a save.
In the first overtime period, the Bobcats stayed strong, taking three shots before UTSA had a chance at the ball. However, the ten minutes fell scoreless, despite two more attempts from the Texas State offense.
But, the Roadrunners halted all attempts from the opposite end in the final overtime period, leaving the game at a 1-1 draw.
Overall, Texas State posted 18 shots to UTSA's 16, with both teams recording 11 shots on goal. Texas State doubled UTSA's corner kicks with eight.
Goalkeepers Mawyer and Joergensen each recorded 10 saves in their 110:00 of action.
Texas State will complete the remainder of its league schedule next weekend host a pair of weekend matches against Northwestern State Friday night at 7 p.m. and Central Arkansas two days later at 1 p.m.
The SLC Tournament will be held November 6-9 in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
