A scoreless first half turned in the Texas State Bobcats favor when Erica Michaud scored in the 48th minute, but Sam Houston State fought back to tie the match near the close of regulation. Freshman Lauren Lewis came through with the game-winning goal in the first frame of overtime to extend the `Cats current win streak to four straight games, taking a 2-1 overtime win over the Bearkats.
Sam Houston falls to 7-4-0 overall and 2-2-0 in Southland Conference play, while Texas State improves to 8-3-3 and 4-0-1, respectively.
Both teams posed an equal threat, posting two shots on goal in both sets of regulation. Mandi Mawyer snagged four saves after the `Kats attempted 15 shots. Luana Miessa and Requel Bueno posted five shots each toward the tally and the top-field duo joined at 79:14 to score Sam Houston's lone goal of the game. Miessa was able to net the goal off an assists from Bueno.
The shot game shortly after Andrea Grifo found Michaud open near the post and put the corner kick right on point. The freshman was able to slide in the goal past Bearkat keeper Jenny Pence.
With a 1-1 bind at hand, Texas State moved ahead to its sixth overtime game this season. The `Cats needed just two shots to seal the win and Lewis proved to have the winning touch after intercepting a pass and footing the goal at 98:04.
Lewis led the team with two shots, both on goal, while Curry and Michaud added a pair of shots, one of which fell on goal.
The undefeated Bobcats will move on to Nacogdoches to face off with Stephen F. Austin in a battle for the top spot in the league. SFA posts a perfect 4-0 leading into tonight's match with UTSA. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m.
