Lawrencia Brown posted her third straight double-double, finishing with 14 kills and 15 digs, but Missouri rallies in games three and four handed Texas State a 3-1 (23-30, 30-25, 24-30, 27-30) loss on day two of the CenturyTel Premier.
Texas State (3-5) played the Tigers (6-2) close throughout the match, as the teams were tied at a game apiece at halftime before Missouri took games three and four.
Game one opened with the two teams trading points before a 10-4 Missouri run gave the Tigers a 20-13 lead. Texas State would get three of the points back to trail 26-22, but a pair of Na Yang kills helped close things out for a 30-23 Missouri win.
The Bobcats gained momentum back in game two, opening with a 12-5 run. After Missouri cut the lead to 18-15, Texas State jumped back on top by seven with a Jessica Weynand kill. The Tigers made a late effort to come back, closing within 27-24, but kills from Weynand and Brown sealed the 30-25 win for the Bobcats.
After falling behind 12-6 in game three, the `Cats used a 10-2 run to go up 16-14. Missouri came back, but Texas State held a 23-22 lead. Five errors and two kills by Weiwen Wang undid the Bobcats, as an 8-1 run by the Tigers gave them game three, 30-24.
Texas State was the team opening up an early lead in game four, leading 15-10 before Missouri came back to tie it at 20-20. From there the teams again traded points, as game four featured seven ties and four lead changes. A Melinda Cave kill tied it at 27-27, but Missouri held off a Bobcat attempt to force a game five and won 30-27.
Weynand led the Bobcats with 15 kills, while Kacey Wimpy added 23 digs. Shelbi Irvin and Brittany Collins each reached the 20 assist mark, with Irvin edging Collins 23-22 in assists.
For Missouri, Wang and Megan Wilson had 18 kills each to lead the Tiger offense, and Lei Wang added 50 assists. Defensively, Tatum Ailes led three Tigers in double figures in digs, finishing with 19.
The Bobcats will now have travel to Rhode Island for the Rhode Island Ram Classic Sept. 13-15 to face Rhode Island, Dartmouth and Maine.
Match Two: Cal State-Fullerton vs. Houston
The first three games between the Titans and Cougars each went longer than 30 points, but Cal State-Fullerton won the marathon 3-1 (31-29, 31-33, 31-29, 30-15). With the match tied at a game apiece and the score 28-27 Cal State-Fullerton, an inadvertent whistle allowed for a momentum swing and point change in favor of Houston. However, the Cougars failed to capitalize despite being up 29-28, giving the Titans a game three win and huge boost in momentum. The Cougars never recovered, dropping game four 30-15. Justine Farmer had a match-high 22 kills and also added 15 digs to lead the Cougars, while Brittany Moore's 21 kills and 10 digs helped lead the Titans to victory.
