SAN MARCOS -
Jessica Weynand posted a career-high 28 kills to go along with 19 digs, but the performance wasn't enough to lead Texas State to victory as the Bobcats lost a closely contested 3-1 (30-32, 30-18, 28-30, 27-30) match to Texas-Arlington on Saturday.
The loss drops the Bobcats (9-6, 2-1 SLC) to third in the SLC West standings, while UTA (10-6, 3-0 SLC) remains unbeaten along with Stephen F. Austin.
After the `Cats fell behind early, game one appeared to be lost with Texas State trailing 25-15, but a 14-4 rally tied the game at 29-29. The Bobcats' comeback attempt fell short though, as UTA took game one 32-30 on a Teena Sobczak kill.
Texas State quickly responded in game two, opening with an 8-1 run to build a lead the Bobcats would never give back. The `Cats cruised to a 30-18 win to even the match at half time.
A pivotal game three started with UTA and Texas State trading points until the Bobcats built an 11-7 lead. The Mavs came back, gaining an 18-14 edge after an 11-3 run of their own. A pair of Weynand kills coupled with a block made it all square at 21-21, and the teams continued to trade points until another tie at 26-26. UTA then went up 28-26 on consecutive kills and held off another Bobcat rally to take game three 30-28.
Texas State opened game four with a 7-3 run trying to force a fifth game. UTA closd the gap, as neither team led by more than two until a 6-0 Bobcat run made it 17-11. Texas State's lead evaporated though, as the Mavs used a 14-7 run to take a 25-24 lead. Lawrencia Brown tied it with a kill on the next point, and a UTA error swung momentum back to Texas State as the `Cats went up 26-25. It was short-lived, as two Texas State errors shifted the lead back to the Mavs at 28-27, and UTA sealed the match with a pair of Sobczak aces.
Weynand's kill total was the highest by a Bobcat this season and the most since Kelly Fletcher finished with 29 at UTSA in 2006. Brown and Melinda Cave each added 14 kills for Texas State, while Weynand and Wimpy totaled 19 digs each. Brown added 15 digs for a double-double while Shelbi Irvin also chipped in with 39 assists and 13 digs.
Sobczak posted a match-high 21 digs to go along with 11 kills despite hitting a negative percentage, while Liz Curry led the Mavs with 14 kills and also had 18 digs.
Texas State will try to rebound from the loss Wednesday night at home against Sam Houston State at 7 p.m.
