SAN MARCOS -
Melinda Cave set career highs with 15 kills and a .524 hitting percentage, and Jessica Weynand added 14 kills and eight digs as Texas State swept TCU (30-22, 30-19, 30-28) Tuesday night at Strahan Coliseum.
Texas State hit a season-best .355 in the match as a team and ran its winning streak to six matches with the win, the Bobcats' first over the Horned Frogs since 2000.
TCU opened the match by scoring the first three points, but Texas State came back to take a 12-10 lead. The Horned Frogs fought back to tie it at 17-17 before falling behind 22-20, and Texas State took advantage of the opportunity with an 8-2 run led by Cave and Lawrencia Brown to close out game one with a 30-22 win.
The two teams traded points to open game two, leaving an 11-11 tie score until the Bobcats used an 11-2 run to pull away in game two and win handily 30-19. Cave and Weynand combined for 13 kills with only two errors in 19 chances in game two alone, a .579 hitting percentage between the pair.
The Horned Frogs came out of the half ready to force a game four and taking an early lead before the teams found themselves tied at 15-15. TCU gained the upper hand with a 22-20 lead and fending off one Texas State rally. After a timeout and down 27-25, the Bobcats pulled within one with a Cave kill before Brittany Collins tied it at 27-27 with an ace. TCU called timeout to try and stop the Bobcat momentum, but Brown slammed a kill down to give the Bobcats the lead before Collins served another ace to make it match point. TCU scored to trim the lead to one, but Brown again came through with the game and match-winning kill.
Brown and Amy Weigle each added 10 kills for Texas State, while Shelbi Irvin had 29 assists and Kacey Wimpy had 15 digs, both of which were match-high totals.
TCU snapped a five-match winning streak and failed to have anyone reach double-digits in kills. LeMeita Smith had eight to lead the Horned Frogs but hit just .097, while Kourtney Edwards and Devon Kirk each tallied seven kills. Nirelle Hampton also added 25 assists while Calli Corley led the Horned Frogs in digs with 12.
Texas State now dives back into Southland Conference play with a Saturday match against rival Texas-Arlington at 2 p.m.
