SAN MARCOS - Lawrencia Brown and Jessica Weynand each posted double-doubles as Texas State opened its Southland Conference schedule with a 3-1 win (30-18, 30-25, 25-30, 30-20) Thursday night at Strahan Coliseum.

The win extended Texas State's winning streak over UTSA to four matches and also gave the Bobcats the first points in the IBC Bank I-35 Maroon vs. Orange Rivalry Series.

A 6-0 run to open game one gave the `Cats an early lead much to the delight of the home crowd, and Texas State extended the lead with another 13-3 run to go up 22-8. From there the Bobcats would ease to the 30-18.

Shelbi Irvin started off game two by serving 10 straight points, but UTSA pulled back to within four at 13-9. The Roadrunner rally would continue as a Kendra Rowland kill coupled with a Weynand error tied game two at 21-21. Texas State quickly regained the lead, as Brittany Collins' ace made it 24-21, and UTSA would commit three errors to close out the game for a 30-25 Bobcat win.

The Roadrunners refused to roll over out of the half time break, building a slim 12-9 lead in game three before Texas State rallied to take a 19-17 lead. The game remained close with the teams trading the next nine points before UTSA tied it at 24-24. Two aces by Victoria Prior sparked a 4-0 run, and another Roadrunner ace gave UTSA a 30-25 game three win to keep comeback hopes alive.

Texas State crushed those hopes with a 7-0 run in the early stages of game four to take an 11-4 lead. UTSA got within five at 15-10, but another 6-1 Bobcat run made it 21-11. From there it was smooth sailing as UTSA would get no closer than nine points, as Texas State eventually won 30-20.

Weynand added 10 digs to go along with her team-high 12 kills, while Brown and Emily Jones each finished with 11 kills. Brown added 12 digs, while Shelbi Irvin also had a double-double with 17 assists and 13 digs.

Rowland posted a match-high 15 kills for UTSA while Prior added 13 kills, but UTSA was out-hit .229-to-.108 as a team. Audrey Hiser also added a match-high 22 digs for the Roadrunners in the loss.

Texas State continues its six-match home stand on Saturday at 4 p.m. against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
